I really enjoyed this series. Somehow missed the first two but must watch them now!!!! However, I hope someone can help with a bit I didn't understand. At the end, when Caroline was in jail, Viv was talking about holding her when she was first born and something about "Joy" dying. Was Joy Caroline's mother and a friend of Viv's or was Viv Caroline's mother? Sorry if I sound dim!!!!!

I didn’t understand the “daughter” reference and I have watched it from the very first episode. I did find this series a tad confusing but managed to just about stay with the plot.
Viv’s best friend was Caroline’s mum. Joy was Viv’s sergeant.

Thanks very much to you both. I hope the first two series are as good. Can't understand why I'd never heard of it before. Only started to watch this one because I couldn't find anything else on to watch and was hooked after the first few minutes.

neither, joy was the policewoman who got killed, the young one. Viv wasn't Caroline's mother.
watch the whole lot on catch up, its well worth it.
