Foodbank Use At Record High

I find this confusing. Some see it as evidence that the government policies are driving lots more people into poverty. But isn't this also a sign that more food is being being donated - so it's a form of redistribution of wealth. If donations haven't increased then presumably when demand was lower food there was a surplus of food in foodbanks or they gave out bigger portions. Demand will equal supply won't it? As more is donated and more are aware then more people will be served. Or are we serving more people as demand grows but giving smaller portions so foodbank users are still going hungry?

Well, Thursday is shopping morning here and as usual I bought a meal (savoury Mexican rice as it happens) to put into a box we keep at church. We keep the church open during the day and the box fills up with donations from people throughout the village, not necessarily church-goers. The contents go to the local charity which helps the homeless and others on the edges - all our Harvest donations go there, too. People can find themselves homeless or desperate for all sorts of reasons, usually beyond their control.
As for modern children and materialism - tell me about it! 2 of my grandchildren have been spoilt rotten to the extent that I told them the other week that if the presents I give them are not used or appreciated (they haven't been) then the giving will stop. I think they were quite stunned, but they know that I mean it. Most people have too much these days
My mother made our clothes and others came from jumble-sales, little was bought new and I had 1 pair of shoes, 1 pair of pumps, 1 pair of slippers and 1 pair of wellies - I thought I was well off. I made my children's clothes too. We had a giant village Jumble Sale a couple of years ago and people flocked in, they are a rare event these days.

I’ll try again, spathi. Who are these people and how do you arrive at the “upper crust toffs” epithet? (None of this “it’s a state of mind” nonsense, please). Why are they “upper crust” and what makes them “toffs”?

It’s true that the majority of nurses enter the profession with a degree in nursing (although since 2017 some hospital trusts operate a nursing apprenticeship scheme) and that during their three year degree course they must undertake considerable numbers of hours in “placement” training for which they are not paid. But their degree course is no different financially to that of any other. They have access to the same support as a student of "media studies". Is this something you’ve just plucked from thin air (as was your support for the “More Tory Lies” thread where you argued – wrongly – that it was the Tory government who had chosen to classify those working one hour a week as “employed”)? If not perhaps you could support this latest claim.

As has been explained, the majority of qualified nurses earn more than the national average wage. Nobody on here (apart from you) is suggesting they don’t earn a living wage. You need to look beyond the snippets that you pick to suit your argument. The article in Naomi’s link does indeed say that some “Home Care Nurses” are paid £7 an hour. But it also says they earn £35k pa. Those on £7 must be under 21 because, as Naomi points out, the minimum wage for 21-24 year olds is £7.70. I doubt many qualified nurses earn as little as that. If they do they must be crackers because they can earn more stacking the shelves in Lidl.
You seem to be very easily taken in by headlines and soundbites, choosing those which suit you and ignoring those which don’t. You then get the hump because you think people are ganging up on you for your views when all they are doing is robustly challenging your claims. Yet you think nothing of tossing insults about against those with whom you disagree (see my opening paragraph). If you want to be taken seriously and have a reasoned debate you really must change. If not people will simply treat you as a troll.

Of course, and most kids understand that not everyone gets the same, but "filthy Marxist views" and going into school to give the teacher a piece of your mind? A little over the top considering the note came from a place of caring, whether mistakenly or not.
