Got to be something subnormal about taking that (albeit part time) job as a career.
Had the same feeling after reading Pierrepoints's autobiography years ago.
To take someone on a gallows, strap em, mask em and hang em without a second thought takes a particular type of individual.

it was a family job, wasn't it?

You don't know about the second thoughts. The whole thing took only about 10 seconds including the walk, so he didn't exactly linger over the job.

But there are plenty of ABers who will announce their eagerness to execute, personally, some criminal who's upset them.

Well it takes a particular type of lowlife to commit heinous crimes to their fellow humans doesn't it? A certain ABer who continues to tell us ad nauseum about our so called 'civilised society' should not use capital punishment as a revenge tool.
What is so bloody civilised about the daily shootings and fatal stabbings in the capital and the rest of the UK? I note no alternative is offered to stop this massacre by those who claim it is uncivilised to put this scum in a box in unhallowed ground. There was never so many murders in the UK back in the 50s or 60's until it was abolished.Loads of outpourings of grief about the death of PC Andrew Harper but dare suggest the perps be strung up and suddenly there are fits of vapours. We have DNA evidence and we all know these travellers did the crime.
I don't think they were subnormal to take a job that upheld the law of the land at that time, I have not read of all of them of course but many were described as fair and compassionate both in duty and away from the job.
It was the job. He took pride in calculating weights etc. carefully and ensuring a quick death. A humane job in many ways.

All sentiments accepted,
But come on, who in their right minds hangs someone because they are told to? Without a second thought?
Pierrpoint hung his friend. (event upon request...you can google it)
The point is, just got to be something amiss if you can execute someone and not bat an eyelid!

Better than stoning someone to death I suppose?
Though ive read on the internet why stoning is just as 'humane' as well.
Do you ever read any comedy Nailit?
Watched a very old episode of Waking the Dead a few nights ago which featured a hanging. Hangman (older version)was played by Warren Mitchell. Found the whole programme quite chilling especially as the man hanged was innocent.
