So it's going to be toast on its own for breakfast this morning.

How long will it take for them to ripen?

The only(personal)tip that works usually for me is-squeeze the stalk end gently, if it gives the avocado is ripe or nearly so

It works 9 out of 10 times for me

Good in a tomato and onion salad with olive oil dressing or sprinkle with salt and then any salad dressing or balsamic vinegar or tomato sauce and mayo mix.

Deep fried avocado's!

I absolutely love avocados, often just eat them with a spoon straight from the shell/peel, they're so creamy.

My favourite way is mashed, spread on toast with a poached egg on top...what's not to like?? πŸ˜‹πŸ₯‘

do you have an airing cupboard...?

a brown bag and overnight or another day on depending on how granite-like they are.....

I'm not a fan - the taste reminds me of the Fairy baby soap of old...

and fffs don't feed the Viagra next time!

Life would be poorer without avocado. Love them...on their own with pink salt...mashed with lime juice, chilli, olive oil and dolloped on toast...mixed with tuna instead of mayo...with smoked salmon...yum!

Agree Baz!!!! That's the way to go!!!!! πŸ‘πŸΏπŸ‘πŸΏπŸ‘πŸΏ

Notice  i didn't say -'Pear'  and hard dough bread :-)

Yes I did notice. We'll make a Jamaican of you yet!!

“Whatever you do, don't try something new - it might be nasty.”

I have tried them, Atheist. That’s how I know they’re ghastly! I think a pink snake might taste better"  πŸ€£

“I'll try anything once.  Except deep fried Mars bars.  I draw the line at that”

I had one once, barry, in Edinburgh of all places (I was led to believe that Edinburgh was a little more refined than Glasgow, where that culinary delight was said to have its origins). It was bleeding awful!. The chocolate on the outside of the Mars bar melts and amalgamates with the batter whilst it’s cooking, so it looks dark brown. Here’s a recipe:

That picture looks bad enough but mine looked nothing like that. The inside of the Mars bar seems to undergo some sort of alchemy which turns it into a single gooey mess, rather than the two distinct elements of he “raw” variety. But with a conglomeration of batter, chocolate, caramel and nougat It tastes as bad as it looks. But it’s still better than avocado on toast!  πŸ˜

I admit hyperbole has its place but to liken deep-fried Mars bars with the breakfast delight that is mashed ripe avocado on wholemeal toast is egregious, to say the least.

sandy, I first mentioned the deep fried Mars bar and wasn't comparing it to other food.  It is just one thing I will never try.

This thread made me investigate the veg. box of my fridge.  I'd bought an avocado some time ago.  On examination, the little sticky lable says 'Use by 3/7'.  It seems to be ripe and soft around the ends, so I've made a simple prawn in rose-marie sauce to pop into the holes in it for dinner tonight.  Fingers crossed.

I should add that it is rare these days that I buy avocados, I used to eat a lot more of them, but I'm v. conscious of the lack of habitat the growers are causing so it's probably half-a-dozen a year now.

OK, we've eaten them with the prawn mayo dressing and they were great!  Jut a bit brown at each end (which we avoided, obviously) so eventually worth it ..... they were reduced because they were 'ready to eat!!!!'   :)  :)  :)

Sandy, how are the avacadoes now?

Still hard as rock, or all brown and horrible?

you don't necessarily have to choose between avocados and chocolate bars, you know
