I have just been given some speakers to enable me to have sound on my computer. How do I know where at the back of the computer I insert the lead? How can I tell if the speakers are faulty or if I've not connected them properly? Failing that how can I tell if I have some sort of integrated speakers already? I know very little about these thiings! Thanks.

If you click on Start (bottom left of your monitor), Control Panel, Sound, you should get a list of any speakers in-built into your computer. If you right click on one of the speakers listed you should see a *test* option to check whether they are working. (These are Vista OS options, not sure about Windows OS but the Sound area of the Control Panel is where you need to start)

I think you may have to plug your speakers into a jack plug labelled SPK on either your sound card or your motherboard but I am sure one of the more knowledgeable techies on here will answer that part of your question.

Thanks, Jugglering for your answer. I have clicked on control panel etc and it says SoundMax. When I did a test there was no sound. Does this mean that I have some sort of speakers but they are not working? If so how can I get them working? Any help is gratefully received!
the speakers will plug into a little headphone type socket that will be on the back by where everything else plugs in, you will probably have 3 sockets it could go into, if they are different colours then it will probably be the green one, if they are all the same colour just try them in turn until you find the right one.

easiest way to check the speakers work is to plug them into anything that has a headphone socket such as a MP3 player, walkman etc etc and see if you get sound

the fact that you got no sound when you did the test probably just means that you don't have any speakers in the system, it's fairly rare for a computer to have them built in.
