Does the phrase 'Its not rocket science' get on anyone elses nerves?

Yes, especially since April 1999. That was when the Mars Climate Orbiter spacecraft's outing turned into a disaster because one group of rocket scientists involved in its construction had used Imperial measures whilst another had used metric!

As there has been no similar disaster in brain surgery, perhaps we should go back to saying: "You don't need to be a brain surgeon to understand this" rather than: "You don't need to be a rocket scientist."

Yes. Much like the phrase "It goes without saying" or "Needless to say", both of which are pretty self-explanatory.

I hate the phrase "And he turnt (a)round and said..." I have visions of a whirling dervish, careering out of control as he/she conducts a conversation, collapsing in a heap, at the end of it all....

Exactly.  (As that's what people seem to be saying to me a lot lately).  (Is 'exactly'  the new 'absolutely'? I suppose it will be said 'on a daily basis' soon.)
