an old roman catholic tradition about not eating meat on friday, however fish was deemed to be ok to eat on the friday, also deep sea fishermen are superstitious about leaving port/harbour on a friday so leave port on thursday or saturday meaning fish holds are usually needing to be emptied by the following thurs/friday, making friday about the best day to get the freshest fish.

Cazzz's answer is correct. In fact, until about the mid-sixties the custom of not eating meat on Good Friday, as opposed to any other Friday, was widely followed even by those who were not RC. At that time fish&chips shops only opened during the daytime twice a week, on Fridays and Saturdays. The only High Street shops at the time allowed to open on Good Friday were wet fish shops. The discipline of abstaining from meat on Fridays was removed by the Vatican in the 60s so it has largely disappeared from from popular culture, but still has a following, especially on Good Friday. Instead of eating meat on that day I was forced to eat tinned salmon (a luxury) which always struck me as slightly incongruous.

There's nothing wrong with your use of capitals. 'catholic' is a simple adjective meaning 'universal', and needs no capital letter except, perhaps, when it is used as shorthand for 'Roman Catholic'. Of course there are other churches who lay claim to the title 'catholic'. Anglican, on the other hand, refers to a specific denomination and is therefore written with a capital letter.
