Has anyone ever heard of the christian name Manderley (as in D. du M's Rebecca I think). I can't help thinking it's a made up name, I mean who ever called anyone after a house? The person I met of that name also said she used to be a 'Bunny Girl' and lived near to the Krays when she was a girl????

there's no approved list of Christian names (I think the French still have one?) so you can call people anything you want - Brooklyn Becks for instance (and remember Zak Starkey and Zowie Bowie and Moon Unit Zappa, children of 60s rock stars who were probably too wasted to know better) - and if kids can't stand the name they will just have to change them when they grow up.

My own name is Dunroamin, and I and my brother Corfe Castle can't quite see the point of your question.

Well Daphne is named after a laurel tree and Rebecca means bound or tied.  My Aussie cousin Jarrah thinks it's great being named after a tree.
manderley was the name of the house wasn';t it, or am i getting confused with ROSS POLDARK AND USING THIS TENUOUS LINK WITH CORNWALL TO GIVE A MENTION TO ROBIN ELLIS THE SEXIEST MAN IN THE 1970's!
And if she lived near the Krays ask her if she knew Bill Hawkes my father-in-law, cos if she did she grew up in Fulham, Hounslow, Isleworth and then she will be tellin the troof.

Sorry Dot, it was just a fleeting meeting so to speak so I can't ask her although I believe she's back in London now. It was in Spain (Nerja) where I met her and she was an acquaintance of a friend. I just found it a bit odd that everything about her was out of the ordinary (name, occupation, location, contacts etc)  Still I suppose not everyone has a mundane life.  I guess if your f-i-law lived in the area he would have remembered something like a bunny girl with a funny name. Yes Manderley is the house in Rebecca and I agree about Mr Poldark..
