Here's what NaTHNaC (which is the official health advisory body funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office) has to say on the matter:

if you are scarred - as I am by midges here in Cornwall, try using bees honey wax - the "comb" preferably...

brilliant for rubbing on operation scar marks too....really reduces the purple alongside, bruising and eventually the scar line.

Thank you, have made notes re this ready for next time.
I agree DT. I had special honey dressings on my post-op wound.
Me too - obviously on mine, not yours, lol
Old Spice After Shave, seriously
I used to get badly bitten when we went away, but then tried a tip from a friend. Basically, 2 weeks before your holiday, start taking a good B vitamin supplement daily. The idea is that when you've got too much B vitamin in your system, your body excretes it in your sweat which makes you smell unattractive to mosquitos. It sounds a bit unlikely I know, but I swear it works for me (and my children, aged 5 & 7). We just don't seem to get bitten as much and if we do get bitten, it doesn't itch so much. Good luck next time!
marmite, i´ve used it 2 consecutive nights, and no mossies so far!!
Have always used Skin so Soft dry oil body spray by Avon - works a treat.
As you can guess I live in Wester Ross where the midges are ferocious in the summer months along with ticks and clegs (horseflies). There is a product sold here called Smidge which they claim is recommended by the World Health Organisation. It works. It claims to give up to 8 hours protection and is waterproof. Suitable for adults and kids over 30 months. Does not contain Deet. Another product that works is Jungle Formula which you might find more readily available.
A mosquito net is the only way to get an untroubled sleep I find when I'm in Italy,- Ikea do one, you have to improvise how to hang it though. I have become quite an expert at this !
Avon skin so soft, dry oil body spray (soft and fresh fragrance). I used to have up to 35 bites on my body at once before I started using this. I now only get one or two bites a summer. And it's on special offer in the current brochure at only £1.50 a bottle.
I'm usually bitten to bits but this year I used strong vitamin B1 for 10 days before I went, as well as the whole holiday, and they left me alone :)
There was some research in the paper the other day and apperently if given te choice between a smelly sock and a person the mosquitos will go for the sock so idea is to just wear the same socks for a few days; try and get sweaty feet then tie them somewhere just outside of the room.
good old fashioned spit and don't scratch... calls for control...
I was told by some-one who lives in Corfu that eating Marmite is the best thing to discourage Mosquitos
the special honey dressings were probably manuka.
