Is there any cause of this? My 15 year son is suffering with them badly.

Yes, a debate is good. People can get all sorts of things off their chest that they wouldnt otherwise perhaps have brought up on here.
Hope you can get him sorted, ummmm.

My son had real problems with cramps at that age ummmm, in association with this:

If you read through it you will see it is associated with growth. So 'growing pains' can't be ruled out.
I have a similar condition in my back caused by a growth spurt.
Hypermobility can make these pains worse (both my son and I are hypermobile).
See a doctor and put your mind at rest.

I'm get really painful legs, especially when resting in the evenings and with cramps and find that keeping my legs and feet cool helps. I've got a fan thing by my bed I have on timer for an hour (in the hope I'm asleep by then) and have cool gels like aloe vera and a Boots foot one for when they are bad or especially in hot weather.
Getting them relaxed is good too - I'm not a big bath fan generally but I have relaxing bath stuff (radox stuff) and dead sea salts and radox bath salts. I can't do it too close to bed though as I need to keep my legs cool to get comfortable to sleep.
I also find massage has helped relax them, especially if feeling tight after lots of cramping, it's a bit wincy at first (thank goodness I'm facedown moment) but actually helps once they've relaxed a bit. Similarly with my feet which cramp up too.
I read somewhere that it can help to let the cramp go rather than trying to fight and tense against to get it to stop it which can prolongue it and make it worse and go into repeat cramps. I've been trying to make myself relax and let it have it's moment a bit more and it has helped a bit.
I'm amazed the cats still have the patience to try and curl up on/round my legs for any length of time :)
I do have arthritis (and hypermobile like Lottie with fibromyalgia) but aside from that's involvement in the above, I hope some of the above might help him get a bit more comfortable.
