Quite simply the welfare system offers a huge step up in their income over their own countries.
"placing them above the Bletchley team and indeed the navy in "cracking" the code does seem somewhat like claiming the stable lad who once bla bla bla ..."

No one is doing anything of the sort. I was merely pointing out the role played by the Poles in the overall effort against Enigma. But, as I said before, it's irrelevant to the question (even if it's generated a lively response :-)"
The English language pulls a lot of people to want to settle here - it is taught as a second language in many different countries to a much greater extent than French or German for example
oh and sorry I don't have anything to add about code breaking Poles?
If it wasn't for the Poles we could have stayed out of WWII.
Iggy, in which why don't we have more nationals from Iceland, Finland, Norway, who also have a good command of English, at least from my experience.
Pdq, no we couldn't.
I don't know where you work,SP, but if your wages were half what they were 10yrs ago, when you could get a job you wouldn't be quite so chuffed with your shiny floor.
And don't believe for a minute they work harder than Brits.
They got all the jobs cos they'd work for nowt 10 yrs ago.
And their preferred now cos they put up with crapola from poor management.
i have worked with people from every part of the world, and found by and large they all worked hard. As long as they got paid a decent wage, and were fairly treated.

I did not say that the Polish guys who did our house up worked harder than Brits. I was giving a counter argument to the one em10 raised earlier. There's simply no one right point of view here.

em10 has encountered the worst that Poland has to offer, an I guess I've been lucky to encounter the best.

The Poles who renovated our place have to be scheduled eight to fourteen months in advance because they get so much work! I'm sure that others have different experiences with people from Eastern Europe, and I'm sure their experiences as just as valid. I can only speak as I find.

Beg your pardon...spelled your name incorrectly.
