I recently heard placing camomile tea bags into hot water then onto eyes  for 10 minutes reduces red and puffy eyes ...whether it works on dark patches maybe you could try ...but also plenty of water and plenty of sleep will help along with fresh fruit veg salad etc...and a product I have been using is the olay range...especially regenerist..a little expensive but well worth it...

Go to www.makeupallay.com and select reviews.

What works for one person won't work for everyone so this isn't an easy Q to answer.  I personally found that Clinique All About Eyes cream helps and YSL Touche Eclat is good for disguising the circles.  They are partly hereditary so you may never get rid of them...unfortunately!
I've had quite bad allergies since I was 12 (22 years ago) and NOTHING I do will get rid of my dark circles.   I could sleep all day for a week and I'd still have circles when I woke up.  My diet is very healthy and I drink loads of water....no difference at all.   I use a light reflecting concealer that does help cover them up a bit, but no cure I'm afraid.
i use something called banana split from no 17 in boots and it works wonders under my eyes.
The area underneath your eyes actually relates to your kidneys, so the more rubbish you eat, drink etc the worse they can get. Drinking lots of water can help to minimise them but wont get rid of them. Try doing some drainage movements with your finger tips working out towards your temples, if you do this when applying an eye treatment this can help considerably, also try an eye mask once a week, Clarins do one which is expensivish but will last you months as you don't need alot, also alot of people do not apply eye cream correctly and get puffy eyes as a result. You need to apply this on the bone around your eye and no closer as the skin is so delicate it does not need alot of moisture and ifyou apply to much product it will puff up and look worse. Like Nicola said one product wont work for all but the more expensive a product the more natural ingredients tend to be in them i never use cheap ones as i dont get anything from them to be honest but its your choice. Shop around on the net as expensive eye creams are cheaper on the net, i would certainly look at clarins eye gel which is around 10 but again will last you along time or decleor do some lovely aromatherapy based ones. Sorry to waffle on a bit, i used to be a therpaist so i can talk about this all day long if i could LOL. Good luck....
Clarins products are really good - they work for me.  They are expensive but last for ages.  However, nothing completely gets rid of dark circles, especially if you do suffer from allergies.
Try plunging your face into a sink full of of cold water. This seems to work for me
There is a range called the 'skin doctor' and they do something for under the eyes. Its meant to be superb. Its in boots, and I know they sell it on ebay, as I got some for my friends 40th birthday.
Apply potato or cucumber slice over your eyes for 10 minutes. You can also apply aloe vera juice and lemon juice on the affected area
