A nicely chewy puzzle, which was a good workout, for which thanks, Agricola. But a very well-worn theme. Are there not some unexplored cultural backwaters we could mine?

This fell into place quite easily, but 6d is causing me grief. Simultaneously discharges drunken volleys (7). I have all the crosschecked letters: VO-LE-S ... so I can't see what it can possibly be,... ...
I've finished the clues, I have the book & author and the other unclueds, but I can't quite get the 3 unclued lights pertaining to the first element in the book's title, so all hints and clues... ...
A carte blanche requiring a high percentage of cold solving, as there were many unclued entries. Clues were very good, as always from this setter, and the puzzle came together with the theme, but... ...

Perfectly good clues and gimmick but the inspiration for this (as described in Wiki) was so utterly depressing that we abandoned the grid stare in limine.
