my old cat
29 Answers
this is a very sad time for me as at 6 oclock tonight im going to the vets to have my 20 year od cat put to sleep, he has well used his 9 nine lives and has been an amazing white perfect nuisance. When anyone came to the house he presumed they had come to see him, even those who were not cat lovers, He has been a healthy beast but we think he had a stroke or similar on sat night and fell down the stairs, Im just so sad, I stayed up with him all night and have nursed him all day and I just feel so sad. We have another cat the same age and just know we will have to go through the same again. Sorry if im going on a bit but other anmal lovers will knw how i feel

i have posted on here about my cat, she is 19 this year and becoming incontinent, not always, but cant relate it to anything but old age. I think her days are numbered but none of us will take her to vets to have her put to sleep. she doesnt seem to be suffering apart from this. so i know exactly what your going through. i think we should think they have had a good life and be thankful we have all those years with them - but i know thats easier said than done.
have you not got anyone that could take it for you. my friend has worked in an abattoir and even he had to get his brother to take his dog. we get to close to them and it is a very sad thing to do.at least you have had a long and happy time together.
may your heart beat strong

So sad, but just remember twilgirl it will be you and your husband there at the end with him and he will feel secure and with people he knows and loves. Our vet lets us hold our animals in our arms when they give them the injection. They have all gone very peacefully and quietly.
You have given him 20 happy years and were there for him until the last.
All the best to you.

suppose its absolutely out of the question for the vet to come to you? I have a very old dog and have this arrangement with my vet so I don't have to stress her out. I know exactly how you feel - very sad doesn't cover it but many, many animals go to the big kennel in the sky without ever having any love and affection in their lives. Your cat is truly blessed to have such a caring owner. Chin up, you are doing the last decent thing for your pet even though its difficult for you. Give him a stroke from me.
What a great life, 20 years. My cat seems to be getting old and he is only 12, I dread to think what I will do when it's his time as he is the only pet I have and he's my best friend. I do feel for you, and your other cat too as it will grieve as well. As the others have said you will be with him at the end and he's had a happy life with you - his old body needs to rest now so he'll be happy.
We have always had the vet come to us to Carmalee so that the animal is not at all stressed out. However, it does cost more and they have to come out with a vetinary nurse as well. Not everybody could affford it. It's by far the best option, but at least twirlgirl's cat will be with people he knows. I could never leave an animal alone with a stranger to end their days, however much upset it causes me.
twirlgirl i feel for you i am so sorry you are having to go through this i have so many times but you are doing the last thing you can help him with rather then letting him linger and suffer you are putting him first in time you will remember the funny and happy times and not as he is now love to you and yours Ruth xxxx
