More eye news...

Went to Eye Clinic today for my post op examination. The Optomatrist was very pleased with his work, said it is healing well & he has stemmed the bleeding at the back of the eye.
I had some sight tests and it is evident that my sight has not improved which I am disappointed about. He tells me there is a considerable amount of scarring at the back of the eye from constant laser treatment years back. He tells me the scarring is clouding my vision & he can remove it but it will only be a 50/50% chance of improving my sight because he has to get at a membrane at the back of the eye.
He said imagine a piece of clingfilm with a layer of dirt on it he has to remove the dirt (scarring) without piercing the clingfilm (so to speak) Its a very delicate operation.
I've to go back in a month to let him know if I want it done. There is no alternative really. 50/50 are not good odds are they? & do I want to go through the trauma again, he will only do it by a Local injection & no sedative this time.

Hi Jemisa. Glad it is healing well. Pity about the sight not being improved. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. If he can do something which would make it possibly better I would personally go for it, but if it could also make it worse, then that would make it a difficult decision.

@Jem - Interesting feedback. In your consultation, were you given an indication of the level of improvement that a further operation might offer? Because that should also be a factor in your consideration.

If he can offer a significant and lasting level of improvement, that might mean it is an operation worth having, although a 1 in 2 chance of any improvement is not great. If they can not offer a significant level of improvement, then it would sway the odds still further against having a further procedure.

I would also want to know the risk if any of deterioration in your vision as a consequence of the procedure before I made a decision....

LG, The last op I've just got over I was told there was a 80/85% chance of my sight returning to normal, I went ahead in full expectation of recovery.
I was sadly disappointed.
This op he explained to me this time its only a 50-50
chance. I'm not a young woman, I've not long recovered from open heart surgery, sometimes I feel I've been pulled around enough. after all its not life threatening is it? (But oh how I would like to see the freckles on my grandaughters noses)

This is a difficult decision, I was talking to a lady I meet sometimes and she is in the same position. Unfortunately only you can make the decision, but I wish you well whatever you decide. xx

I feel the same way jem. I had an operation like yours years ago to stop bleeding in my eye. I have only partial vision in that eye but have adjusted to it. I cannot see out of the centre, only peripheral vision. When I went to the hospital recently to see about removing cataracts they would not do it because if it didn't succeed and I was one of the few who lose their sight because of the operation then I would not be able to see at all. They also diagnosed age related macular degeneration so sooner or later, and gradually I shall lose most of my sight. I am trying to make the most of what I have now and so I know what you are going through. I thought about paying to have the cataracts removed but like you cannot take the chance. Keep smiling jem, as I know you will, through your jokes.
