If not, then might it be 'life events'?
Something has triggered this and I am hoping that working out what it is might take your mind off the thoughts and also help to avoid re-triggering them in the future.
What's the fear with regard to hospital and/or treatment?

What's happened in your life, has there been a family Death? are you in Debt? are you in loss of confidence? do drink too much? you need to see your GP, they are the people that known you, & know your history Gordie, all on here at time's have troubles, you are not on your own, it is too easy to take the suicide action, take advice, talk if you can to your family / GP, Best of Luck.
Gordie, you certainly won't be admitted to hospital if you speak to your GP. He is there to help and it may be that a course of anti depressants may be in order (or not). Please speak to someone about your feelings - if you feel you can't share with family or friends, please give the Samaritans a ring. They are totally confidential and won't judge you. It really is good to talk. Good luck.
As has been said, you must talk to your GP first. They will refer you to the Mental Health team where you will be assigned a counsellor who you will see on a regular basis to monitor your progress. You can usually choose if you specifically want a male or female counsellor.
Antidepressants are renowned for side effects, especially nausea and headaches. They can also make you feel more depressed for a week or two, but this is normal. Please make sure you read the enclosed leaflet so that you know what to expect and can report to your GP anything not listed. If the side effects are too awful, your GP will find one more agreeable to you. There are lots to choose from!
Diazepam is also known as Valium and is usually given to depressed people to help to make them sleep, as Wolf and I know that insomnia often goes hand in hand with depression.
Whatever you choose to do, well done for being able to talk on here. If it helps, come back regularly and tell us of your progress. There is usually someone about, even in the early hours if you need to chat.
