Getting Rid

I want to get rid of an Ivy tree- it is now growing up the walls of my house and over to my neighbours.

Some years ago I was able to take my "bit" down - but neighbour loves it and let it grow "their side".

I am truly afraid of my walls becoming damp so as the tree has been rooted in my yard - I want to get rid of it so that it will stop growing.

Woof - I certainly would have taken it down but and a big but - husband neighbour is in hospital getting a new hip. He did get a new hip about 10 years ago but it has worn away so at the mo is getting a new one and in dreadful pain (there are loads more complications) so I don't want to upset my neighbours.

If I "severed" the top of the ivy from the bottom, would it stop climbing for another while anyway. That is the ivy growing on the wall

Might give that a go Chris. Thanks. My side of the fence was covered in ivy but I cut it all back last Friday but need steps to reach the ivy on the wall. So will try that Chris - thanks again.

Reminds me of Queen Mary who moved to the country during the war. She ordered all the ivy to be cut down, much to the chagrin of her hostess whose pride and joy it was.

JJ I had success last year by severing at the base, letting it shoot again and then treating it with glyphosate and leaving it alone. Both I and my neighbour would love to have it dig out but its rooted under the houses. So far we have no regrowth which is something of a miracle. I should say though that the main trunk was only about as thick as 3 pencils so probs smaller than yours

Woofy. That's exactly what I did with the blasted ivy in my garden. It was the only way as the roots were far too deep and strong to dig out.

I adore ivy, Conne...I covered my husband's coffin in it....
If your walls are sound it'll do no damage.....if your walls are crumbly the ivy will hold it up....embrace the ivy...... :-)

Thanks all, I am sorry Gness but I aint happy with it on my walls - the ivy just grows and grows methinks out of control.

Sorry I ever planted it - the main trunk comprises of 3 hoselike roots which combines together going into the ground but I will be able to sever it on the wall. I have also brought my steps/ladder down too.

I also have to replace the bulb of the flood light lighting up the yard. So a few bits and bobs to do. Thanks all again.

I would cut the main trunk as near to the ground as possible and just let it die off naturally.

Maggie I could do my best there albeit roots are very thick but I am assuming correctly that the roots have also come out on side of neighbours fence too but they like the ivy.
