Curiously, the French with their stricter laws, and, let's face it, they have a more generous welfare scheme than we have in other areas, do not seem to be infested with hordes of unemployed being reduced to crime or begging in the streets.

i would quite like it if they wouldn't recruit any more foreign nurses (or doctors for that matter). i am a nurse (and train student doctors) and am sick and tired of working with people i can't understand, who do not understand me, cannot write properly, read properly, do not get the british education system (or medical/nursing perspectives), have overly-christian outlooks (which they try and foist onto others), and judge people negatively with mental health problems because of their own upbringing/culture/religion. their level and quality of work is stupefying (not to mention the work dodging).
however....the health care assistants (on the other hand) are polite, literate, well trained, try harder, and are generally better liked by everybody. i find that a funny little foible of nursing today....and of course i cannot say that every foreign nurse is like this, but as a general rule it is, sadly, very true. i may get some stick for saying it, but i think that somebody has to.

And how many of the beggars in Paris were French, bednobs ?You might be surprised if you asked! In the South they are certainly professionals and foreign. Police in Cannes raided a lock-up garage and found a whole load of crutches and other tools of the trade, including the illiterate French documents which beggars use when they accost you at traffic lights. Those do have a striking similarity; it is as though they were written by one person and then copies run off. No surprise that the leaders and performers in this enterprise were from Eastern Europe. That's where we get our prostitutes, in the region, from too

Well a lot has been covered on this subject and its been interesting reading all your views, some positive and some negative.
Most seem to have been about midwifes and nurses, but what I couldn't understand in the newspaper link, was about the need for butchers over here, as most seem to be closing down due to the supermarkets cheaper prices, or high rents.
Off to bed now, but thanks for the interesting post, and maybe there will be a few more comments tomorrow?
Nighty Night.
