Since 2007 he has been cleared for release twice, by US presidents George W Bush and Barack Obama. Its a ruddy disgrace that he has been mistreated for so long.

This man has been tortured, and detained without trial, not by some rogue state or banana republic, but the Unites States of America, aka the Land of The Free.

Despite a formal request by then foreign secretary David Miliband, American authorities refused to allow him to go.

So why has still been kept in prison for the last 8 years ?

Mr Aamer, who has four children, has permission to live indefinitely in the UK because his wife is British.

The sooner this man is back home with his family the better.
yes mikey but who's going to get sued? Not the septics!
Non Britain. Did you mean Briton? According to the article he is British.

// The last British prisoner in Guantanamo Bay has been released, it was confirmed today. //

He will not get compensation from us if he has just been held by the Americans. But if his maltreatment was done with the knowledge or even participation of the British security services, then we will be liable and rightly so.
He just happened to be in afghanshitistan working for an islamic charity..chortle chortle...of course , as youd expect...

british when it suits him....i hope the authorities keep a close eye on him when he comes back...which im sure they will
There is no mention of suing at the moment. This man will need medical care when he returns, so we should pull out all the stops to help where we can.

I listened earlier to somebody being interviewed on the Today Program about this man and she was full of praise for the DM's support in getting him released !

So...well done DM, and its not often you see me say that.

But there are many aspects of this case that really puzzle me. If two American Presidents have ordered that he be released, why was that not complied with ?

Oops! just spotted Briton.

Thought I might correct it before the correction police get on my tail.
Just because they didnt charge him doesnt mean hes innocent....
^^ The CIA are a law unto themselves in the USA.
The CIA are still widely suspected of organising the assassination of Robert Kennedy.
Bas...there is no evidence that he wasn't working for a charity, otherwise he would have been charged with an offence and then committed for trial.

Unless you know different of course ! If you do, then share your evidence with us, and the authorities. Stop chortling and start explaining ....In other words, put your money where your mouth is please.

What kind of response from the American authorities could we expect if an American resident was held in Britain for 13 years, without being charged, and tortured into the bargain ?

Wakey wakey AOG
Weren't there lots of charity workers in Tora Bora?
AOG...from the BBC News link :::

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34675324

"Mr Aamer, who has four children, has permission to live indefinitely in the UK because his wife is British"

But his nationality isn't the most important thing right now. After being held illegally and tortured for 13 years, it now appears that he has been freed, and not before time.
bazwillrun - //Just because they didnt charge him doesnt mean hes innocent.... //

Indeed - doesn't mean he's 'guilty' either, since there was no charge or trial or verdict.

Would your opinion be the same if he was white British?

Oh dear too late, I see the Inspector General has got in first.

He was an Islamist scumbag before he, briefly, set foot in this country. Part of Labour's cunning plan to invite all the world's islamist scum here, because, 'they wouldn't attack the country that's harbouring them'.
Another one of Labour's schemes that worked out well. grrr.

/// Would your opinion be the same if he was white British? ///

There you go again, is there no end to your insinuations of racism?

I don't do 'insinuations' - my request is a legitimate one - and it is addressed to Bazwillrun and I am sure he is able to think - and answer for himself.

Let's not go down that path again - shall we?
Svejk - //He was an Islamist scumbag before he, briefly, set foot in this country. //

The CIA dropped charges - do you know something they don't?

Better get onto them so they can turn that plane back!!
