In this particular case I would cancel the cheque or ask for it to be returned for adjustment and send one for a penny!
I wouldn't have sent a cheque in the first place. I have been asked in the past for money instead of a gift and I have always refused and asked to be given a list. If no list arrives - or it is a ridiculously expensive one - I buy my own choice of gift which I think the couple could use.
When I first married, an elderly neighbour made a peg-bag and filled it with pegs. It was very much appreciated by me and kept and used for years.
