Can't believe that fear, greed, and a xenophobia, that has NO place in the 21st century, has triumphed. I'm sorry England, but you need to hang your collective heads in utter shame. Roll on the next Scottish referendum.

I think immigration may actually go up over the next couple of years as France makes less effort in Calais but more importantly as people from EU countries make a dash to get here before we leave (which will take a few years).
But in theory we can set our own rules- a points based system eventually- to weed out unskilled/low skilled applicants , unless of course we find that we still need to accept EU's free movement rules in order to be allowed to export to Europe
Mine was for Beniecuddles at 10:07
bernie...the argument goes that once we leave the EU, we won't have to allow non-Brits to migrate here, if we don't want them to. Under EU membership, we can't stop them, if they come from within the EU that is.
//Prudie...see my post on another thread this morning, for an answer to your question at 09:58 ! //

Mikey, what do you expect her to do? Trawl through every other thread on this subject in search of your answer? She's asked you a question - have the courtesy to answer it.
Er, as well as Turkey there are four other 'candidate' countries
Albania
Serbia
Montenegro
Macedonia

Their citizens will not now have the automatic right to live here when they eventually join. Those of us who voted 'leave' were looking at the long-term effects or remaining in the EU.

I am thankful that the right decision was made and look forward to Article 50 being triggered ASAP.
If you have border control you can stop immigration (people smuggling excepted). That needs no explanation as it's obvious and could not be stated more so.

In practice there would be exceptions, such as genuine asylum seekers (not that we get any as all countries around us are safe) and one needs to allow cooperation in teams with the best in the world in some areas.

And to our shame we will need labourer type employees until we manage to sort out our own citizens taking jobs rather than staying on welfare. But that requires ensuring decent employment offers and not pay/conditions that would only appeal to those from low pay/low cost countries. And a welfare system that identifies the work shy and ensures they are not better off living off of others.

It may also require encouragement for businesses and other employers to spread the need for labour throughout the UK, instead of expecting everyone to up sticks and find a hovel to live in, in London, or wherever.

So until the government finds the will to sort that out we will probably need immigrants on short term basis. And we will certainly need those already employed here to be willing to stay, which I'm sure most will.
>but its hardly a huge victory for the Leavers is it ?
Would you have said the same if it were the other way round, mikey?
A win is a win- whether you win the Premier League title by 10 points or on goal difference doesn't matter- you still get the trophy & prize money and go in the record books
>50% is a victory. Not a landslide, unfortunately, but a close call victory.

But now the real work starts.
FF...yes I would, but I have already said that I respect the result.

A head, nose or flared nostril ... a win is a win.
I would like to know how Scotland will disentangle itself from the UK and then join the EU what will be the timescale which comes first
Haha the OP is a rant by a Scot, calling the English and Welsh xenophobic. Kettle? Pot? I do agree with the last six words of the post though.
I agree maggie, Scotland deserve independence. Next time though the whole UK should vote.
Would the EU even want them?
Another big underestimate from our political expert. Some would say ' a victory for common sense!' :-) Rule Brittania. Thank you Wales. You didn't attempt to stab the UK in the back!!
Looks like my Scottish F.I.L ( voted stay and residing in Cradley Heath) is now an Alien. :-). Wonder how long it will take for the citizens of the rest of Europe to follow our lead and start demanding their own freedom. Goodbye Cameron and Good riddance Angela's Third Reich!!
Proud to be 'xenophobic'. She forgot 'Little Englander' too (lol).
I was thinking how civilised and decent we were being to each other on AB this morning considering how disappointed some must be feeling. And then I read this OP ... Shame indeed, except for the last sentence.
// Next time though the whole UK should vote. //

A guaranteed out then 3T.
2nd referendum for Scotland?? Bring it on. We have now saved ourselves a fortune by not giving millions to the EU for the future. Looks like more savings to be had for England, Wales and N.I. Take your begging bowl to Europe and we tear up the ' Lothian deal'
Isn't it wonderful - no more money to the EU - yay!
