Nothing tawdry about reminding people of just how tawdry The Sun and Mackenzie is.
Is it possible to quickly remove/put on the hijab between news items? Maybe she could take it off whenever the story could be linked to Muslims in some way and then put it back if she wishes for other news stories. The flaw there perhaps is it may not have been known when the Nice story unfolded on the night that the driver had any connection to any particular faith
FF she quietly puts the hijab on to take the news broadcast. I believe that she does not wear the hijab during her everyday affairs.

This from late March makes interesting reading:

/// Channel 4 News is generally considered one of the fairer broadcasters by the British Muslim community and was particularly commended for its coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza in 2014. However, much trust was lost last year when one of its presenters, Cathy Newman, was branded a liar after she said she’d been ushered out of a mosque. ///

/// Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation said the move showed that religious Muslims could be accepted as part and parcel of the fabric of British society. ///

/// “I think this is a really positive move by Channel 4 News and will go some way to making amends after the Cathy Newman affair,” he said. ///

So it would seem that this was an exercise in 'making amends.'

Why is it that I nearly typed 'Kow-Towing'?
Mr aog
You beat me to it
I was about to type she just wears it as a prop imo.
She has said in the link to the Liverpool echo that she wants to be a role model to young wannabee muslim journalists. "Look at me.I am a muslim. You can do my job as well" type of plug.
I still don't think she has the need to wear it at anytime but if she want's to use it as an advert I think she is a tad unthoughtful.
The shift in responses has been interesting.

The OP wondered if Channel 4 should have placed a Muslim presenter in a hijab to present a news item about an alleged Muslim fanatic atrocity.

This has steadily morphed into a wider debate about whether or not the presenter wears a hijab as a matter of course, or if she could be accused of using it selectively.

Now we are pondering the notion that she is a sop to offended Muslim leaders.

Interesting ...

Fatima Manji> I will not be deterred in this mission by the efforts of those who find the presence of Muslims in British cultural life offensive.

I think The Sun, Kelvin Mackenzie and some on this thread "find the presence of Muslims in British cultural life offensive". Inevitably, such people are going to disagree with Fatima Manji. As Naomi charmingly put it:

Naomi> To put it frankly, people who are upset or personally affected by the appalling actions of Islamists in Europe can do without a woman dressed in Muslim garb being shoved in their faces reporting it directly after the event! Make of that what you will.

Sadly for those for whom Muslim=Islamist=terrorist, tough. We live in a free country, and the statement from Channel 4 News hits the nail right on the head:

C4 News> The comments published in The Sun today by Mr MacKenzie are offensive, completely unacceptable, and arguably tantamount to inciting religious and even racial hatred. It is wrong to suggest that a qualified journalist should be barred from reporting on a particular story or present on a specific day because of their faith.
I wonder if the feelings of those who find no wrong in her wearing a hijab, would have the same feelings if she started to wear the burka or the niqab?

Thin end of the wedge and all that.
//I wonder if the feelings of those who find no wrong in her wearing a hijab, would have the same feelings if she started to wear the burka or the niqab?

Would not bother me at all - she could run around in a bikini for all I care AOG - I take it you would have an issue with it - why not just come out and say it - should she be allowed on TV at all - after all she is a muslim woman!
I repeat what I'm sure I said earlier , had I watched C4 News on that occasion my concentration would have been fully on the atrocity within the report and not the look/garb of the presenter.

I do wonder what trt's views are as he started the thread and has not commented.
AOG - // I wonder if the feelings of those who find no wrong in her wearing a hijab, would have the same feelings if she started to wear the burka or the niqab? //

I would have an issue with either - not for religious reasons, but because they would inhibit clear communication via facial expression and eye movement.
I quite agree Mamya, but I confess I would have taken a quick peek at Jon Snow's sock/tie combo ;-)
It wouldn't bother you if she wore a burka or a bikini?

Seriously?
EcclesCake

Simply shocking Eccles!!
Seriously because it is the news I am interested in not what the person is or isn't wearing!!
//I would have an issue with either - not for religious reasons, but because they would inhibit clear communication via facial expression and eye movement. //

Could I assume you never listen to the radio then ?
Retrocop - ////I would have an issue with either - not for religious reasons, but because they would inhibit clear communication via facial expression and eye movement. //

Could I assume you never listen to the radio then ? //

Feel free - but you would be incorrect.
Just a simple yes or no would have sufficed. sigh
A simple no then.
How on earth could you take 'News' seriously if the broadcaster of that news was wearing a bikini?

If I ever see anyone reading the news on a British news channel wearing a burka I will know that the country is well and truly ...........................ed
