After a terrorist attack, some people say that 'action must be taken', and that 'the West must wake up'.

These are abstracts - can anyone explain in (without the use of abstractions) what specifically they mean by 'action'.

At risk of sounding all "elitist".... The elephant in the room here is that very, very few of us are really qualified to make a judgement about effective security policies. It could be that "banning muslims" (to take a common example) or forcibly closing mosques would reduce our risk of terror attacks to 0. It's equally plausible that it wouldn't, because...

What I'm asking is what specifically needs to be done to, if not eradicate the threat - but to significantly reduce it.

No, imo you wanted posters to shout 'Hang em'
It's simple really......we need our own Guantanamo....internment without trial for a period of 6 months, with no access to or right to practice religion.
This man had been investigated by MI5 over extremism.
These people are on a list for a reason. Those reasons are extremist views/ideology and possible plans to commit terrorism.
Time to remove them from society.
So called Peaceful Muslims, & others say, that its just a minority that are, or become terrorist.

For those peaceful Muslims, how can they follow a religion like Islam, when it says in the Koran the most horrific verses of killing, harming, disgusting female atrocities, but not only to other Religions, but their own?

We let them block roads & footpaths with their marches & prayers, we !!!, sorry said enough, or my post will be deleted.
The idea of 'taking action' is the standard human reaction to a massive event like this.

In order to counter our real and valid feelings of impotent fury, we like to talk of 'action' because 'doing something' implies a re-establishment of control which we feel we have lost, which is why things like this happen.

The worry is 'action' will simply feed the Jihadists more than we do already.

The Jhadists hate The West, they are convinced that we are an evil stain on the planet because we are not pure like them. They see us as something to be eliminated, and further more, they see us as aggressors, determined to destroy them before they destroy us.

So we need to be careful that 'action' doesn't simply underline this concept for them, which gives them carte blanche to do more of the same.

I am unsure what we should do, but I know what we must not do, which is behave as though the laughably titled 'war on terror' is doing anything constructive in terms of moving forward - yesterday proved once again that it is not.
I firmly believe that the security agencies should have all the tools they need to do their jobs properly - and we should stop whinging about the breach of our privacy and civil rights, much as it sticks in the craw.

Spot on ChillDoubt, we give into certain groups too much, time to clamp down on them and remove them from our society IMO.....pdq
BA for SunnyDave at 10:58.
The trouble is that, even if we halt all overseas operations against ISIS/ISIL/Daesh, it will stop nothing here - they have long memories and we were pretty nasty to them in the Crusades of the 11th/12th/13th centuries ...

/// The point they are making is that this attack was not a direct result of open borders, lack of security at ports/airports or immigration policies ///

'OR IMMIGRATION POLICIES' ???

Now you have got to be joking?

Thanks - that's what I mean by not using abstractions.

With regard to interment though, how would that work? Known associates? Those who have accessed flagged sites?

Let's say the security services have a database of extremist sites (I would be surprised if they didn't), perhaps those IP addresses who have accessed those sites would automatically go onto a watch list - but at what point should monitoring be upscaled on the individual?
I will clarify for you, AOG

......recent immigration policies.

It might be better to wait until we see what we are dealing with before blaming any particular policy.
There should be a reintroduction of ID cards, containing it's owners DNA and fingerprints.

Nearly every other country has them, why don't we?
Because the civil libertarians object to it, AOG. Can't see how that would have helped in this case though - the madman was known to the agencies.
Here's some comments from a leading Islamist

The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets and the faithful our soldiers...

Europeans across the world will not be able to walk the streets safely if they keep up their current attitude towards Turkey

"You cannot put women and men on an equal footing. It is against nature. They were created differently. Their nature is different. …Our religion (Islam) has defined a position for women: motherhood. …Some people can understand this, while others can't. You cannot explain this to feminists because they don't accept the concept of motherhood."

“I speak openly. Foreigners love oil, gold, diamonds and the cheap labor force of the Islamic world. They like the conflicts, fights and quarrels of the Middle East. Believe me, they don’t like us. …They look like friends, but they want us dead. They like seeing our children die.”

The term “moderate Islam” is ugly and offensive — Islam is Islam

What can be done when idiots like this lunatic are ruling countries?

got it ... we can moan and protest about Trump ... that'll sort it.
Agree with chili.
Also stop pandering to so-called moderate Moslems. Eg, not only sanctioning halal meat but making it compulsory in prisons, hospitals, etc. Banning pork from school menus.
Step by step, drip by drip 'we're' surrendering our way of life to suit their way of life.
Calling concerned people racist, islamophobes, etc fuels the already ingrained islamic sense of grievance.

A case of "closing the stable door after the horse has bolted", springs to mind.

PC Keith Palmer didn't have time to ask for the terrorists' ID Card and inspect it?

How would ID Cards have prevented yesterdays attack?

Don't you really mean, "before we blame any particular religion"?

------------
PC Palmer ought to have been routinely armed, like every police force in every major city in Western Europe pretty much is.
This is the 21st century.....it's time to arm the Met forcewide.

RIP PC Palmer.
