Another shooting in London. It seems to me that hardly a day goes by without there being a shooting or a stabbing in a part of London. What can be done about this, is there nothing the Mayor can do? Stronger sentences for when they are caught perhaps?

More shooting. Birmingham this time. This area has "changed" somewhat since the late 1980s.

Time to try something different? Full sentence to be served; no time off for parole or good behaviour. Instead, time added for misbehaviour. A tougher regime: haircuts, prison uniform, basic food, no contact with visitors. Prison should be a place to be feared, not a joke where the living is easy as some seems to regard it.
We used to try executing people for stealing. Even children.

Didn't work. The severity of the punishment isn't going to deter people motivated either by desperation or by a complete lack of empathy for their victims.

As far as I am aware it is not part of the mayor's brief to determine prison sentences for any crime, even those committed in London.
I see that the phrase 'twisting my words' now means 'repeating what I have said back to me'.

The great thing about AB, is that you learn something new every day.
I think Gun crime is already a 5 year minimum sentence.
Coppit having worked inside a prison and talked to many 'lifers' I can say that making prison harsher or reintroducing the death penalty will have no effect at all! It is quite simple NO ONE EVER EXPECTS TO GET CAUGHT ! So the idea of prison never occurs to them!
to press Eddie's point
you dont take an IQ test to get into prison

alternatively 75% have reading skills of primary school kids

Thanks for all your replies. I've given this a great deal of thought during the day and have also spoken to a young man who might help me understand and the first thing he said to me was (and some of you have broached this here) drugs, it's all about drugs. So perhaps we do need to educate children at a very young age, about the dangers of drugs.Perhaps if they knew about the dangers of drug taking/dealing, it might just, just keep some off the road to destruction.
PP that's why I was working in the education dept. Grown men who could not read a word! Scary !
^ We used to get copies of The Sun to use as adult reading books! It has the vocabulary of an 8 year old so it was ideal for the purpose.
Bit awkward trying to get a 50 year old man to read by using 'Janet and John'.
Further news on the recent London shooting, sadly the poor boy as died.
