Another Shooting
Another shooting in London. It seems to me that hardly a day goes by without there being a shooting or a stabbing in a part of London. What can be done about this, is there nothing the Mayor can do? Stronger sentences for when they are caught perhaps?

I noticed that too.
1. you will still not alter their in bred life style of drugs, violent crime, knives and guns.
2. are we not all given a clean slate from the start, how we conduct our lives and grasp our opportunities is up to us.
AOG, your two posts seem to contradict each other. You literally cannot have inbred lifestyles and a clean slate.
They are mutually exclusive.
But perhaps jim360 and I (and anyone who understands English idioms) have misunderstood what you mean.
Could you please clarify?

There's no such thing as a clean slate.
None of us are born with a clean slate. It's been scribbled on previously by our parents, our family and our environment.
What we each have a responsiblity for, is trying to rub out the things on that slate that are wrong (such as bigotry, familial criminal behaviour, dependence on the state etc), and write our own stories.
Some people are better at it than others.
But no. Your birth slate is not clean. It's covered with scribbles.

Also, this is genuinely funny:
"What are you suggesting, education? we have already tried that."
Really?
No...really???
I would suggest that you might be a little off with that. I grew up in a very rough area, but I have O'levels, A'levels and professional qualifications.
It worked for me.
Are you saying that eductional ability and attainment don't make any difference?
Or something else?
Seriously, it's a great little statement there.
"We've tried that..."
You've made me smile.

/// Campaigners cite stop and search as a key reason why 40% of those behind bars hail from BME background – a greater disproportion than in the US ///
Seems like stop and search may be the answer then?

Bck to the OP, I also tend to agree with TTT that generations of right on lefty thinking coupled with plod being a service not a force has ensured that cities are largely lawless horrible places.
Zero tolerance coupled with 3 strikes and out is the answer.
Get building them jails for some long term inmates, or come to a deal with Turkey or Thailand. It wont take many, once they realise on the third time they are off for 50 years bird it will sharpen the mind.
And for the record, this has nothing whatsoever to do with race. Scum like this are very diverse.

Read AOGs stop and search link. That's one reason.
Then have a read of this:

Then do a Google about unemployment rates amongst BME peoples.
Then do a bit of research on BME people having the most insecure jobs.
That'll do for a start.

/// None of us are born with a clean slate. It's been scribbled on previously by our parents, our family and our environment. ///
When one is born, we have no idea what our parents or family have been scribbling or what environment they have been born into.
These issues are only discovered when we are much older and can then have an effect on the way we as individuals choose to let them.
So I am right in saying that we all start off with a clean slate.

You are twisting my words once again, when I said "education" I wasn't referring to the three Rs.
I was in fact referring to the Liberal Left way of educating youngster to the evils of drugs, guns and knives.
It is the same with sex education, once they are free from their class rooms and out on the streets, that education goes to pot.
But still it gave you a chance to tell us all what a clever little bunny you are, even if a vast majority of us could outshine you.
I can also remember that you once said that black people are not given the same chance in life, due to the surrounding that they are brought up in.
But as you have proven it has nothing to do with the colour of one's skin, but the individuals themselves, so well done sp.

Stop and search works?
No it doesn't!! They target people because of their colour and not because of any intelligence gathered.
Example
2 days running I and a black colleague had need to drive round London, day 1 I drove and went through several checkpoints and didn't get stopped once - day 2 black male colleague drove same car and was stopped at 3 checkpoints!!
We were only driving a bog standard car - it was a works vehicle - but I think its obvious why he was stopped and not me!

I'm happy to accept that your individuality is going to be a large part of how your life develops. But so are things beyond your control. The two are interlinked in an incredibly complex way. It's monumentally stupid to pretend that, say, people growing up in more difficult family circumstances, or who must contend with a greater risk of being discriminated against, are still solely responsible for who they end up as.
I barely had to work at all to end up where I did, especially in maths -- at least at High School. I got lucky, in particular, that my parents were happy to encourage reading from a very young age. I got lucky, too, that some in my wider family were happy to encourage education and learning, eg my Great Aunt who ended up taking an OU Physics BA in her 70s, while I was still in my early teens. Imagine if I had been born with the same features but with parents who didn't give a toss about learning. Would I have still ended up where I am now? I doubt it.
This isn't a race thing, either. But education and opportunities go a long way. And it's not just our responsibility to seek them out, either. If you don't know what's out there, how can you go seeking it? Some people are just brilliant and determined enough to overcome any barrier they face, others can require a leg-up to get started.
