Ignorance and mockery from the usual quarters I see. (And since I started writing this post a believer in moral relativism: all cuktures and practices are qual.) Another normal crazy day on AB then. Aceh province is a part of "moderate" Indonesia which has adopted Sharia and its penal code the hadood. Whippings, stonings and amputations are not extreme,...

"If the present rule of law in our country ceased tomorrow, and I, as someone big enough and strong enough to inflict my sense of 'justice' on you, decided that you deserved to be beaten severely because you have chosen a Latin AB name, would you accept that punishment as 'the way things are', and reject the intervention and protection from, say, a European country? "
If the fact that Latin names was not allowed was clearly educated to me, from a young age, then yes. If our society agree'd that law should be implemented.

"That's not the argument though, is it?

Yes. If they are not innocent, they are guilty = punishment. So happens the punishment where they are is lashings.. Not uncommon.
Cultures are different and you can't save the world with your ideologies.
People live how they live.. thats how their society, civilisation and culture works, live and not judge it. Deffo don't think you're better than it, because we have no proof that we are.

We are clearly not going to find common ground here.
I just hope that you never find yourself innocently transgressing in a country where violence is the standard punishment - and you remember that living in a civilised country as we do, gives you the luxury of ignoring injustice elsewhere.

That's not what I said.
In my scenario, the law changed yesterday, and I am beating you simply because the whim takes me, and I am bigger and stronger than you, so I will beat you silly because I feel like it and I can.
That is the 'justice' that you seem to view as acceptable. I continue to suggest that it is not.

spath - // Also andy, it wasn't the case that the law "suddenly changed" your example is futile. //
That would be true if barbaric countries operated their laws in the same way we do - by structure and precedent.
The entire point of my increasingly outlandish scenarios is illustrate that in a lawless society, the 'law' is whatever the biggest and strongest and most violent say it is, and they can and do change the law on a whim to suit their thinking on the day.

spath - // "Then you are clearly selective in what your concept of 'justice', or more accurately injustice, actually is."
There is literally no problem with that. You can't stand up for absolutely every injustice in the universe else you wouldn't have a life of your own. //
That's true, but it's not an 'either or' situation - anyone and everyone can protest injustice where and when they find it - I am doing it in this discussion with you, and it's not taking over my life by any means!
