Ignorance and mockery from the usual quarters I see. (And since I started writing this post a believer in moral relativism: all cuktures and practices are qual.) Another normal crazy day on AB then. Aceh province is a part of "moderate" Indonesia which has adopted Sharia and its penal code the hadood. Whippings, stonings and amputations are not extreme,...

"If the present rule of law in our country ceased tomorrow, and I, as someone big enough and strong enough to inflict my sense of 'justice' on you, decided that you deserved to be beaten severely because you have chosen a Latin AB name, would you accept that punishment as 'the way things are', and reject the intervention and protection from, say, a European country? "

If the fact that Latin names was not allowed was clearly educated to me, from a young age, then yes. If our society agree'd that law should be implemented.
//February, 2018: Man and woman, both also Christian, flogged six and seven times respectively for playing a children's entertainment game.//

Just an innocent past time. These stone age barbarians probably thought they were conjuring up spells.
"That's not the argument though, is it?
"

Yes. If they are not innocent, they are guilty = punishment. So happens the punishment where they are is lashings.. Not uncommon.

Cultures are different and you can't save the world with your ideologies.

People live how they live.. thats how their society, civilisation and culture works, live and not judge it. Deffo don't think you're better than it, because we have no proof that we are.
Spath, is whipping someone for having sex outside marriage a ‘decent’ punishment? Is stoning a woman to death for committing adultery a ‘decent’ punishment?

We are clearly not going to find common ground here.

I just hope that you never find yourself innocently transgressing in a country where violence is the standard punishment - and you remember that living in a civilised country as we do, gives you the luxury of ignoring injustice elsewhere.
That's not for me to decide. Their culture obviously has decided that it is acceptable. Where were this womans mother and father whilst she was being whipped?
"I just hope that you never find yourself innocently transgressing in a country where violence is the standard punishment"

Well if i am innocently transgressing, then i'm not innocent so they have a reason to punish me?
" gives you the luxury of ignoring injustice elsewhere."

That is a side stab.

I have on more than one occasion tried to speak out for injustice elsewhere.

That's not what I said.

In my scenario, the law changed yesterday, and I am beating you simply because the whim takes me, and I am bigger and stronger than you, so I will beat you silly because I feel like it and I can.

That is the 'justice' that you seem to view as acceptable. I continue to suggest that it is not.
I'd go UI and get a new username, and follow the law.

Then you are clearly selective in what your concept of 'justice', or more accurately injustice, actually is.
spath - // I'd go UI and get a new username, and follow the law. //

No problem.

Guess what, tomorrow I am going to blind you because I have made blue eyes illegal - would you like to try and argue around that?
// Ignorance and mockery from the usual quarters I see.//

no no V-e - you are being too hard on yourself !
ter daah !
Also andy, it wasn't the case that the law "suddenly changed" your example is futile.
all pretty standard stuff for TROP.
"would you like to try and argue around that?"

My eyes are green so i wouldn't care.
"Then you are clearly selective in what your concept of 'justice', or more accurately injustice, actually is."

There is literally no problem with that. You can't stand up for absolutely every injustice in the universe else you wouldn't have a life of your own.
spath - // Also andy, it wasn't the case that the law "suddenly changed" your example is futile. //

That would be true if barbaric countries operated their laws in the same way we do - by structure and precedent.

The entire point of my increasingly outlandish scenarios is illustrate that in a lawless society, the 'law' is whatever the biggest and strongest and most violent say it is, and they can and do change the law on a whim to suit their thinking on the day.

That's true, but it's not an 'either or' situation - anyone and everyone can protest injustice where and when they find it - I am doing it in this discussion with you, and it's not taking over my life by any means!
if three men want to whip a woman, and 20 neighbours disagree, then the woman won't get whipped, believe me.

These things all happen in public.

If that happened in the UK, a load of lads would go and jump the men doing the public whipping.

Their community has that option.
