If the ministerial code is broken how serious should the consequences be in this case?

The code says "harassing, bullying or other inappropriate or discriminating behaviour" will not be tolerated.
It adds that ministers are "personally responsible" for how they act - and that they can stay in office "for so long as they retain the confidence of the prime minister".

In particular, there is the Ruttnam case for constructive dismissal, that will almost certainly make many of the details of these allegations public. I think that's not due for some months now, so clearly, for the time being, Patel is safe. But it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.
I don't think there was ever a golden age for "standards", in the sense that there's nothing new about Patel's behaviour. But what does seem to be increasingly true is that even *trying* to uphold such standards is becoming less and less common. Patel should have been sacked -- at the very least, she should have apologised for what she did, not for how it was perceived.
