It seems that any suspicion gives banks the right to close accounts, without explanation, to avoid risk, even when such suspicion/risk seems ridiculously small and remote. That seems wrong. Obviously society shouldn't tip off the bad guys that they are under suspicion, but one wonders what society thinks closing the accounts of everyone around them...

“Had the victims been other people I’m sure SP would have understood it very well.”

Not sure what that means.

“No one who values freedom in this country should be defending or supporting this.”

Why assume this is a freedom matter? What if the back found serious irregularities and wanted to cut itself from risk?

The only ‘evidence’ owe have of this being a calculated May be by the banks to attack him has come from Farage. How do we know why the banks refused his business? Think about timing…why is this happening now? If this truly were a freedom of speech matter - why now?

Farage is playing the victim and we should we wary of this one-sided story.

“Agendas reign supreme.”

They certainly do on AB. It’s what keeps the site alive.

Certain people will post questions about Sir Kier, Boris, Trump, “wokeism”, trans rights etc etc…the people who post most regularly all have agendas.

Thank God.
Is it helpful to gaywash this story?
As helpful as it is to do the same with all "issues" ... and as necessary.
//Farage is playing the victim and we should we wary of this one-sided story//

Well there is plenty of evidence to support his claim. As the links provided have proved. The banks refused an account to a young downs syndrome girl because her late Grand father was a former Chancellor? That is excessively overbearing and I would suggest beyond their remit. It is not a one sided saga at all imo.
i think the fact its happened to plenty of others rater proves its not peronal to him because the bank didnt like his politics, which is what seems to be being suggested

Incredible.
Which is where we came in.

Talk about entitled. Read the thread!
I've just heard a reference on C.4 news which says that this practice has been going on for 6 years! Appalling. It needs to be a legal right to be able to hold a band account - given the increasingly technological nature of society.
Has he named the bank?
Sorry LadyCG. Who are you referring to?
Retrocop

Thanks for the link - but it’s to a Daily Mail column which doesn’t exactly provide any evidentiary support for Farage’s claim.

And should we be blaming the banks when they’re just abiding by the law as per PEPs.
What do you think about the treatment of Nigel Lawson's Granddaughter. Do you not think there was a whiff of dirty politics at play here?
Definitely.
First a sidebar…I didn’t know Dominic Lawson was Nigel Lawson’s son. I used to l read his books avidly until he started working for the mail. If he’s Nigel’s don, he must be Nigella’s brother.

Never knew that…

With regards to the treatment of his granddaughter - it seems harsh, but I assume the bank was concerned about section two of the ‘Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations 2017’:

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2017/692/contents/made

As evidenced elsewhere - regular account holders have had their accounts terminated due to the Act…brought in by this government!
Dirty politics by Barclays Bank?

Hmmm…not sure that one carries weightz
*weight*
it's Nigel Lawson's granddaughter, not Dominic's. Once a bank decides to close a suspicious customer's account, they're obviously likely to do it for the whole family in case Daddy decides to hide his funds there.

As to why - we don't know, so people can speculate according to their own prejudices. Go for it!
jno

Yes...but the woman in question was Dominic Lawson's daughter wasn't she? Making him (Dominic) Nigel Lawson's son and Nigella's brother.

Ahhh...just looked it up. It Dominic SANDBROOK who I was thinking about. He also write for the Mail.
sorry, sp1814, I was actually correcting retrocop's error, which was a bit pointless since he was perfectly correct. Apologies to him too.

I remember in the wake of Robert Maxwell's death Dominic Lawson writing a column somewhere saying it was jolly hard on Maxwell's wonderful children, including Ghislaine. You can feel one child of the famous reaching out to others in empathy.
