Autism is not a 'sob story'.
It directly affects behaviour because severe sufferers have absolutely no concept of empathy, sympathy, or right and wrong.
That does not excuse such actions - nothing does, but if it is found to be a factor, it goes some way towards explaining them.
We have to wait for the full story to be revealed, but I am trying to keep an open mind about the circumstances that have led up to this horrible tragedy.

We are all a product of our experiences, mine with autism is direct, I have two immediate family members affected, and several more distant ones as well, so I have an understanding of the reality of dealing with people who are literally unable to grasp the concepts of morality, pain, and right and wrong in terms of other people.
I am not trying excuse what has happened, that is not possible, but I remain open to an explanation that will not bring these poor souls back, or mitigate the agony of their families, but may at least give some reason behind what thus far appears to be actions devoid of any reason whatsoever.
We need to wait and see what emerges, and try not to let our anger consume us, which helps no-one anywhere.
naomi - // Doubtless you've compassion enough for all of us. Just as well. He won't be getting mine. //
Please don't patronise me.
My view differs from yours, but I accept it, and I don't look down on it.
I'll appreciate you extending the same courtesy, if you can put down your self-righteous burden long enough.
Ellipsis - //
Wrongly ...
Not that, even if it had been correct, it would have excused the lawlessness and utter disrespect of the victims ... //
It is a worrying trend that the need for a huge number of people to become emotionally invested in the tragedies of strangers is leading to that being used as an excuse for riots, assaults and general mayhem.
It's time people realised that they are not entitled to vent their self-righteousness on the police and their own communities, they need to learn some discipline and respect instead of acting like vigilantes in a futuristic science fiction film.
more violence overnight, and more today. and still the authorities maintain an information vacuum that the conspiracy theorists are falling over themselves to fill.
