Banning The Burka- Would It Work?
153 Answers
As there hasn't been a new thread on burkas in the last hour I wanted to seek opinions on one point.
One argument raised a few times which i can understand is that it is a symbol of oppression of women. I think it often is. Some say they are forced to wear it against their will , some say they want to wear it and we shouldn't deny that freedom. I suggested a poll of Muslim women would give us more info but the idea was dismissed as i was told we wouldn't know if they were lying.
So, if a ban were introduced would it stop oppression? Would these men who currently force/pressure them to wear it let them go out without one or would they force them to stay indoors so that other men can't see their faces (in which cases they'd be even more oppressed) . Or would the men let them go out but insist they still cover up in public and risk arrest?
Also, from a practical point of view, could it be policed if some people still wear them? If a woman gets on a bus wearing one would the driver be expected to stop and call the police if she refused to uncover her face? Would a shop assistant be expected torefuse to serve them and call security or the police?
Do we know how well it's worked in other countries?

nailit - // And as if by magic
//Be careful - that loving Christian religion you set so much store by is making you go soft!!!//
Theland religious beliefs have nothing to do with this. //
I think they absolutely are to do with this.
Theland spends plenty of time on here preaching to us about how we all lack God's grace, and unlike him, we are living sad and meaningless lives without Christianity.
Then he comes on threads like this and rolls out reams of prejudice and bile about a faith different from his, and I think he deserves to be called on out on it, and that is why I do so.
Of course, being the mischief-maker that he is, Theland studiously ignores my challenges, but they are there for all to see.
If you want to preach Christianity on one thread, and Theland does, then it behoves you to live by it on others, and Theland doesn't.

//FF, I know what he was talking about. I made that clear in my other post
In that case Naomi I was puzzled as to why two different issues seemed to be conflated in one sentence when you said "No, they wouldn't ... so why the OP thinks his suggested poll would reveal the truth is anyone's guess."
Unless by OP you meant TTT not me in which case I misunderstood what you meant by OP

So we don't ask people their views- even if a bona fide opinion poll becaus ethey might lie- so we decide for them what they think. Right-o. Were they also lying to you as you have spoken to so many Muslim women (more than some have had hot dinners I recall)- in which case maybe you haven't learnt as much as you think.
