I love this site... have been a member for far too long lol

I rarely post but am always here and as a vegan I am basically gobsmacked at times at peoples attitude towards my lifestyle choice and yes it is a choice. As is yours.

BUT [from the Vegan Society]

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

At 47 years of age [50 this year] I adopted the Vegan lifestyle because I became aware of the apathy and my own jaded sense of what is right and wrong. Right to kill a pig... but not a dog? blah blah blah

Have you ever watched any documentaries concerning veganism? Earthlings? Cowspiracy? What the health?

Do you know what cognitive dissonance is?

I'm not posting this to be confrontational, I am truley interested in what people think :)

I thing that there is a difference between something that just so happens to conform to vegan requirements and something deliberately created to be do. It seems wrong to me to label both with the same description, like "vegan". Bread is bread, it's not particularly vegan, it just happens to be acceptable to vegans. But things like those Marks and Spencer Percy Pigs sweets getting changed to favour vegetarians/vegans over the normal eaters are different and more suited to the description.

The few vegans I know are similar to the many religious people I know. They are constantly telling me my lifestyle is wrong, they don't like being judged but are more than happy to judge others. In both groups it's the double standards I don't like.

I thought that people maybe would not want to eat eggs because it's still exploitative of the hens. After all, they will have been bred specially, over centuries, to maximise egg production at the expense of a longer life. It's quite exhausting laying eggs day in, day out, I should imagine. Not to mention what happens to the hens after they've passed peak laying period (which is about a year or maybe 18 months at a pinch). At that point they get killed anyway. Not to mention the issues of battery hens, which (worldwide, at least, if not in the UK) still account for most egg production.

Being a commercial egg-laying hen is a short and not necessarily a pleasant life, sadly.

Also Percy Pigs aren't vegan... they have beeswax in them.

So... why you would want to eat something that contains something you polish your table with is sort of beyond me now...

as you can guess I am not a vegan vegetarian anti gluten or even pescetarian
but I do not ridicule those that choose that life style choice
but I do try to avoid artificial foods but mainly because I do not like the taste

Slaves come in all colours, the supply at the time seemed greatest from one area of the world though. But this is an invalid comparison. Nature is about one species living off another, that's natural. Abusing members of one's own species such that they have a life of doing your bidding and enduring your attitude has no such parallel, and is a belief system thing.

For some reason * vegans* appear to irritate some people . If I were a vegan , no way would I visit a non vegan for lunch/ dinner. What a burden they appear to be.

Why do you assume I'm talking about chickens laying for the commercial market Jim? What about those running freely around private gardens? I get free range eggs from that source and in eating them I'm harming nothing.

I don't hate vegans. However, I think they have a mental health issue if they insist on denying themselves the whole gamut of the world's vast larder in all its infinite variety. As for catering for vegans in my house - I wouldn't do it. I'm fine with vegetarians as long as they're not the sort that say "I'm vegetarian but I don't really like most vegetables"!

If you have ever had the chance to interact with birds of any sort you may have a beginning of an understanding of how sad their life is... it breaks my heart.

Like I said I have two parrots [rescues] and they are my life... I in no way claim that a hen is as intelligent as them but she has the maternal instincts the same as any mother [it's just hormones like ours]. To stand day after day after day after day *** out babies.....

You hadn't mentioned that, Naomi, and since most people don't get their eggs from their back garden I don't think it's too unreasonable to focus on commercial eggs first.

In any case, even from the back garden, I'm sure it's still possible to worry about the exploiting of decades of selective breeding and what they've done to change the chicken from its wild form. I'm not saying I agree with this argument, but I don't think it's that crazy to want to take a stand against long-term exploitation of animals by objecting even to that.

People always ask me what I eat. My answer is to ask them what they had for dinner last night and then I 'veganise' it for them.

Shepherds pie... mine has lentls and black beans... and bisto... beef version in a tub is vegan
