RABAT - A Moroccan theologian repeated his claims Sunday that Muslim girls could marry as early as nine years old, arguing it was sanctioned by the Prophet Mohammed.

"The marriage of nine-year-old girls is not forbidden because according to the Hadith (the Prophet Mohammed's sayings), Mohammed married Aisha when she was only seven-years-old and he consummated his union when she was nine," wrote Sheikh Mohamed Ben Abderrahman Al-Maghraoui on his website (Maghrawi.net).

"Those who criticise me, like the press or Moroccan television as well as the lawyer who filed the complaint (against me), are part of a secular attack against the Islamic nation and its theologians," he added.

Islam does not believe in digits like 17, 18 as it is different in all parts of the world. In England it is 16, Northern Ireland 17 and in Spain it is 13.

Which one is right?

1. Islam believes in puberty, and that is closer to the nature.

2. Islam believes in marriage and no hanky phanky, so few people in few countries get their children married in early age as they do not want a pregnant teenager with no sign of the father of the child.

so according to the muslim religion if a girl is old enough to have a period its ok for her to have sex..is that right?" In england i've heard the expresion old enough to bleed old enough to �$%^ " but i did'nt realise this stemmed from religious teachings.. That permission is for guidelines as if people do then it is allowed as physically that person is not a child any more. Emotionally yes. But that does not mean it happens on regular basis. Just like in Islam you are allowed to marry up to four women at one time (long and separate issue) but that does not mean ever one is doing it.

On the other hand can you say that if in Spain they allow a girl as old as 13 to get married then in England according to you it would not be right? Then when you let this happen at the age of 18 then in another country someone might say it was wrong as their age limit might be 19.

I was just about to say something similar to Wizard. In answer to the question, I can believe it - but I find it difficult to believe that anyone, particularly anyone living in a western society, can defend it.

How can you possibly compare a nine year old to a teenager - who even so, is still a child? Whether or not she is menstruating, a nine year old girl is a little child with a child's mind and a child's body. Any man who would abuse that child (and it is abuse) and take that innocence, or who defends those who do, is nothing more than totally dispicable - and that applies to whatever culture he comes from. I find this absolutely sickening.
