My Avast demanded to be updated yesterday, so I did. Now when I plug my external hard drive in (a little Maxell portable) nothing comes up and I can't back things up. I assume these two events are connected as there was no trouble till today.

Is there any way to tell Avast to permit it? Or of restoring the earlier Avast? (Though I assume the latter would be risky.)

(Please don't advise installing MSE instead as I had the same trouble with it in the past; that's why I installed Avast in the first place.)

I use up-to-date Avast on W8.1 and don't have this problem. If you right-click the Avast icon in the task tray you'll find the 'Avast Shield Controls' where you can disable it for a period - see if the drive is recognised when Avast is disabled. I suspect it won't make a difference.

Thanks for the suggestion Shaney, I am currently reading the Maisie Dobbs books by Jacqueline Winspear, they are very good. I think the Dot is fun rather than useful. You can listen to the radio through it, get weather forecasts and news updates, play music, set alarms and timers and use magic plugs and lightbulbs to turn things on and off...oh and it will read kindle books to you as well. I have been splurging lately because sometimes you need to. I got a ships chiming clock and matching barometer from ebay. I do like a mechanical clock and the ships ones have a nice quiet tick and chime.

I'd quite like to splurge but basically I don't have the room. Pretty well every time I buy something, I have to pension off something else. Three adults on a bicycle built for two is a bit crowded, And jno jnr has still got stuff at the marital home to bring back.
Morning all
Bright atm but still cold .I've been up since silly o'clock as was fed up with shifting from side to side on my painful hips.
That does sound like fun Woofy.I think I need a magic plug to get myself into gear. I love the Maisie Dobbs books .I've got the latest one on order from the library but I'm in a long queue.
Yes, it's nice to have a splurge now and again. You have to keep the economy going :)
Hope you're all ok.
Morning all, not a good night here, cat driving me,up the wall, yeowling and shouting all night. I am shattered. Then I found an upside down cockroach ( its that time of year again!) Well they dont fool me, I know upside down and not moving is a trick. So i sat for about half an hour wondering what to do, i cant touch them ! So i wriggled past and got Henry out, sprayedmp said thing and it wriggled and wriggled and i was terrified it would righten itself, so zoom up Henry it went, and outside went Henry, and he will remainmthere till Mr N comes home and empties the bag,
So then i decided to look for that mascara shaney, the They're real, but none here, so brave techno neti has gone on ebay.es and ordered a travel one for €6 + 4€ p&p, delivery 9-11 may, I was shocked at the price of the real size anything from £24 -£34! What did you pay shaney? By the look of it it was a travel one i got last time.
...but i definitely remember paying £15 for my 4g one!
I paid £4.95 with free postage Neti .8.7gm.
I tell a lie Neti.I've just looked back at my Ebay purchases and it was
£3.93 with free postage .BENEFIT THEY'RE REAL BEYOND MASCARA - BLACK 8.5G it says on my purchase history .
This one

《《 fuming》》• i got mine from ebay.españa, i suppose i should have looked at uk! Never mind, ill be happy when it comes as am wasting a fortune on buying other ones even l'oreal which are useless!
That's a bummer. You should have hung on until you came on hols and got it here and sent to your sisters .Mine arrived after a couple of days.
email shaney. Sorry everyone, its just to do with films etc..
just had text from hija, shes missing home and felt like coming back for the night, which is cool, but I have to get Mr N out if she does, she says no she'll leave it until tomorrow night now.
Afternoon all
Bit of dull and dreary one ,raining here and still very chilly.
Nothing doing really, just having a break from ironing the usual stuff from my bro.Shirts and more shirts.I won thirty quid for the Spectator crossword so that was a nice surprise this morning .
Perhaps I'll buy a new iron:)
Hope you're all ok.
Gosh well done Shaney. I have been turning out pots today and tossing the dead stuff. I have repotted a grape vine and a lilac into 50 litre pots and cleared a space for soil storage. Greenhouse was supposed to come today but has been delayed until tuesday, actually this is better for me.
Freezing here. Deep joy, hija is home for the night!!
Morning all, here I is. I have such a faff with site now I sometimes give up, it doesn't move on my kindle and not a lot better on here. I managed to get in long enough yesterday to have a forehead slapping/groan moment (you know what I mean) and then it shut down. Probably best really :)

Anyway I've been doing odds and ends around the house, nothing exciting. Had some more sad news, someone I'd known since we met at antenatal classes over 40 yrs ago passed away very suddenly about six months ago and I've only just found out. I was surprised when I moved here that she lived not far away from me. She was lovely, not that much older than me. I need some good news for a change.
Hope you're all ok and we have some warmer weather this weekend.

oh, that's a shame, Robi, people dying at my age is always a bad thing but there seems to be more of it every year.

Ed Balls Day seems to come round more quickly very year too

"The irony of people complaining that rampant commercialism has ruined #EdBallsDay when it's actually a Roman pagan festival originally"
Morning from frozEn Ibiza, it is really wintry here again but rain has stopped and there is a dey wind so washing is getting dry.
Had brekkie with hija's in a bar and she has now gone to work. Have a feeling she will he here to live soon as she is paying 600€ for a flat share and it is ridiculous. It all depends on the amount if tips she gets!
Afternoon all
Cloudy and dull and still on the chilly side .
That's sad for you Robinia. When people of your own age start going it's awful really. Two old boyfriends of mine and of my age have died in the past year.I saw the obits in the local rag and it sort of makes you gasp.
Lol Jno .He's the chairman of Norwich FC .The fans will be singing balls to Ed Balls if they don't improve their performance any time soon.
Hope you're all ok .

Good morning all. Robi I am sorry for your loss....even worse somehow that you didn’t know at the time.
I find the site fine now both on laptop and ipad, slow when I go to my posts as it has to have a good think but fine otherwise.
I seem to have another migrainey thing with associated stomach upset. I think its weather related, either way its a real nuisance.
Morning all, another Bank hol weekend.
Yes, I seem to have lost so many people this past 15 years or so, some close some not so, but I know I'm lucky to have little people around. They just require more energy than the old ones and those eyes in the back of my head don't see so well these days. :)
Dull but it looks like the temperatures are rising. Hope it gives everyone a boost.
