Viewing Media

I'm trying to watch some video fotage on the web, but I'm obviously missing a codec or something, as it won't play on my screen (text next to the IE icon in the bottom left of the screen tells me it's downloading, then almost immediately states that's its done, but nothing happens). Is there a way I can found out what I'm missing, so I can download the right thing, to watch the video?
