Long-term - definitely low calorie.
Short-term - low carb.
I was on a low-carb 'diet' recently due to various intollerances i had but found the food repetitive and not at all natural.
I reintroduced carby type things and now, because i still want to lose a bit of weight gradually and healthily, have gone back to low cal which is working a treat!

i was told this once when i wanted to lose weight. i have lost two stone and have remained a constant weight.
When you wake up your the fire in your stomach is burning with a small flame. Eating carbs or a very heavy breakfast straight away will put out this fire. Instead eat a piece of fruit and some warm water to relight your fire. Once fire has got going (around 10) you can then eat something more substantial. Come lunchtime the fire is ready for a big meal but not too big because if you eat too much you'll just put out the fire. little and often is key. Absolutely no carbs after 7pm.
Sounds crazy but it worked for me!!

you don't need to avoid carbs, but choose starchy carbs over sugary carbs so that you feel full longer. to lose a pound a week you need 500kcal less per day than you need. this depends on a lot of things but that works out on average as about 1500kcal per day for women, 1800-2000 for men. i always find it easier to lose weight if i do more exercise. i wouldnt encourage the atkins diet as this has a risk of being high in total and saturated fat, not good for your heart -plus fat has more than twice as many calories per gram as carbs or protein. also remember alcohol contains a lot of energy, i also find it easier to lose/maintain weight if i cut it down a bit.
The best one that's worked for me has been this book called "The Movie Star Diet" by Steve Simmons. I lost 35 pounds in 3 months and am still losing. You should really give it a try. http://www.themoviestardiet.com
