Did You Change Your Name?

I changed mine from a fairly unusual surname and became one of a gazillion Joneses! My sister, a research scientist, changed hers but kept her maiden name professionally, simply because it's that name her papers are written in etc etc. My best friend didn't change hers because her husband has a surname she hates. What about other ABers?

I like to see a woman change her name or the man to change his name when getting married, I think it is important for the family to all share the same name, so they all know they are all part of the same family unit.

If children are not involved I don't really see it as a big issue but if I get married I would consider it an honour for my wife to take my name.

I believe Albert Smellie didn't like his name so he changed it John Smellie.

My mother changed her name and practised in her married name
Same christian name initial ( A )
but her view was so what ?


My sister in law practises in her maiden name even tho she qualified while married, and publishes in her married name

but when it comes to girls - nothing has to make sense does it ?

My maiden name always had to be spelled out and was the only one in the phone book except family. (Glasgow)
My married name always has to be spelled out and was the only one in the phone book. I went ex-directory. (Vienna)
And I'd sworn I'd marry someone with an easier name :-)

Lol Tara, that was the only thing I looked forward to about changing my name, not having to spell it out constantly. No such luck with the foreign call centres, I still get asked how to spell it.

Like janbee I reverted to my maiden name upon divorce and use it for all financial, official and legal dealings - I'm me and in France it is not a problem. I remarried (late) last year and dear OH is so pleased that I use my new married name for all other uses. Gets a bit complicated sometimes when I have to remember who I am to sign something. Don't know what I'll do when we return to UK next year; such a complicate job to change everything that I suspect I will keep the status quo and be known as Mrs...., but deal with banks,taxman etc. seperately. Also my 2 published stories are under my maiden name, so I'd write under that anyway.

I have a cousin called Marijke so she has to 'always' spell both her names :-)
