Is it too late to prune my hydrangea down to 18 ins. my son the gardener says the flowers will be set for this year, but it was so big last year I couldn't see over it or round it, I did chop the top off in October , would be glad of your thoughts, thanks.

I never dehead or prune my hydrangeas until all chance of frost has gone so not usually until late March/April.

No, not too late Grannie,

March is the best time to prune you Hydrangia, as long as there is no frost about at the time.

Obviously you won't get flowers on the bits you have cut off lol but the buds left on the plant should still flower as normal. I don't do any pruning on mine till march either and i live in the far south of the UK

No, not at all too late - I leave mine completely alone, no deadheading or anything, until Easter every year. If it's anything like mine, it'll still flower away later in the year.

...and PS flowers aren't set yet, the leaf buds are barely forming on the stalks, there's loads of time yet for flowers.

I have a hydrangea in a pot and a couple of years ago pruned it down quite hard, that summer it never flowered. So last year I left well alone with just a few straggly bits cut back, and that summer it had an abundance of flowers.
