For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I checked the pattern (bought it yesterday) again; it's a Rowan shawl and they gave me the pattern passably translated to Swedish but I especially asked if I could have a copy of the pattern in English as well, thinking I might be able to ask you biddies about it, aren't I smart. It says: "Tension: 13 sts and 22 rows to 10 cm measured over patt using 5 mm needles" - so that "over patt" bit probably means that in THIS case I should make the gauge in the same pattern as the shawl...? Right?
If it's a very textured pattern I would do the swatch in the pattern Kit .As you will use more yarn doing a pattern
If the number of stitches and rows per inch don't match the pattern , the size of your finished article could be will be a whole lot bigger or smaller.Even a couple of stitches out can make a difference to the finished article .
http://www.io.com/~cj...MysteriesOfGauge.html
The only thing is the info is in inches so may not be much help .I can't find a metric one
Freezing cold here but no snow as yet thank goodness .
Hope you are all Ok ..have to go out in it now .Brrrrr...
Keep warm folks .Toodlepip for now .

Love Aga cookers, in fact mum made dad buy a house simply because it had an aga, and to my horror rather large spiders. When I was 17 or 18 I had a motorbike (Triumph tiger cub for vinny - but was souped up) and used to be so cold after driving in the winter that I used to pop my feet into the bottom (slow) oven , oh lovely it was!
Thanks Shaney I'll save that page to my bookmarks!
Neti I've visited the AGA shop here in Stockholm, it's absolutely lovely. I asked will the floor hold and they said not necessarily...! Might end like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-QGOMSIMfE It's acommercial for a brand of coffee, the theme is "when you have unexpected company" (treat them to our coffee).

New kitchen for me too please....but I don't want an Aga, I'll be expected to start cooking again.
You're a bit keen with the knitting aren't ya? I've never done a swatch in my life...and I've never knitted anything that was too small ;o)
Yes Sweedie, rest assured there's always someone in here with a cheery smile....

....and some pink lav rolls & carbolic soap...?

We thought very serously about an aga but as this isn't our final house we decided against one. Instead we went for this
http://www.rangemaster.co.uk/index_246.htm
which is a significant amount of the entire kitchen cost, that and a tap set which has a selector for filtered water as the water roudn her is so hard and disgusting. We have one of those brita jugs, but that gets scaled up and manky so quickly...when i saw the tap (this one http://www.instantbri...eproduct/55/taps.htm)
I did a Violet Elizabeth Bott in the showroom till DH agreed
YES I am sad, no we are not rich, we are just a lot poorer than we were

Ha ha ha Robi, you must post that piccy the next time Somebody "accuses" you and Lottie of living together :-D
Don't know about keen, it's just I never knitted anything complicated before and they do stress the importance of getting the gauge right and the yarn is expensive so I wanna get it right. It's Rowan's Kid Silk Haze, AKA Kid Silk Crack, because a) you get addicted to it, and b) it will give you a nervous breakdown cos it's so difficult to frog it when you make a mistake. (Is 'frog' American? Means 'to rip it' - ribbit, ribbit!) It's this shawl http://i49.tinypic.com/2wm2fy9.jpg It's called Chartwell and I wanted the same colour as in the picture - Ghost - but it wasn't in stock so I chose Pearl instead http://www.wincentgar...e/product.php?prod=38 Don't hold your breath biddies, I've got more wrist warmers to knit before I even start on the shawl, and once I start it'll probably be a three year project, knowing me...
Oh my that's one beautiful cooker Woofy...!

The prices that I can see on your site Kit say it's over 11 euros a ball ! On sites here it's between seven and ten quid and that's for just 25gms depending where you buy it .I never knit swatches either but at that price and weight I think would :)
It looks very nice though and is very similar to Shetland cobweb knitting .

Oh wow Shaney, some of the projects on that site I don't understand how anyone can finish them during a lifetime... look at the Queen Ring Shawl for instance... hence the 'heirloom' perhaps: You inherit the unfinished project from your ancestors, like a knitting relay race down through the generations ;-)
I would love to try this

in splendour. Which would cost £19.00. Perhaps after Christmas. Just the sort of thing to wear whilst planting out bulbs!!
My aunt knitted the most beautiful shawl for my son to mark his birth. I never dare use it. Just get it out occasionally to wonder at it.
Night night folks.

I have a book about it .Shetland knitting .Let's face it .....I have so many knitting books and patterns I could open a shop :) Sad really .
Some of them are very old .I've collected them for years . Not of course that you would need a knitting pattern these days for cami knickers or a gay little hat :) They're nice to look through and a piece of social history They've found pieces of knitting from ancient Egypt .
When I was child and we still had a fishing industry here, when my Dad was ashore he used to take me down to the quay where the scots girls used to gut the herring .When they weren't gutting they were knitting and this fascinated me .They would stand in groups and chat and knit this lovely Fairisle as if by magic Their needles used to flash, they knitted so quickly and without looking at a pattern.
I never had shop bought jumpers as a child .My Mum knitted them and ,of course ,the infamous knitted swimming costume :)
