It’s a much looser system ymb: there’s no powerful party hierarchy there to “groom” prospective future candidates. Presidential hopefuls come in and take their chances in the caucuses where they’re at the mercy of the members. You saw how chaotic the Democrat caucuses were this time for example. You don’t even need to have much of a background in the party. Look at Trump (once a Democrat)
The Democrats had plenty of choices other than Joe Biden, but they rejected them all in the end. Whether any of the other candidates would have made a difference is anybody's guess -- I rather suspect not, however.
Thanks Ick, i didnt realise not that I take a lot of notice of US politics. I did wonder about Trump previously being a democrat though but assumed he changed parties like they do here.
Seems a very chaotic way of doing things. Perhaps they should change given the quality iof the two candidate this time round.
Going mental over there, apparently there was a was a ballot delivery in Wisconsin at 4am that gave Biden an extra 200k votes without a single vote for Trump. An hour prior it was reported that all trends indicated a Trump win. America is finished as a democratic entity and the World has just become much less safe. Not my fight now. I am almost 73 yrs old and thankfully will not see the inevitable World of chaos and violence that is now almost assured. The only winner is China and radical aggressive religious dogma.
It suits the two parties to face off against each other in this way, so I don't think there'll be any change. A larger problem is that the US is obsessed with electing everybody. I know that unelected officials often get some rap here, but I think people who do criticise judges just want to see better (in their view) judges replace them, rather than to see judges become distracted by the ballot box (and I don't think anyone in the UK wants to see overtly Labour/Tory judges!).
That’s not to say they couldn’t or shouldn’t do things differently ymb.
The whole process, through the bizarre Dixville Notch tradition, on to the different voting and counting systems is quirky to put it mildly. I am not sure the electoral college delegates are obliged to vote as expected. There is a special name for such delegates which escapes me.
If it does end 270-268, that might be worth bearing in mind.
Do check the number of votes counted compared to the number of legitimate votes registered. Particularly, for now, Wisconsin. Early, but obviously hard to verify on main stream media sites, claims that 170,000 more votes were counted than voters registered in Wisconsin.
