Could this common sense approach be the answer to what must be one of the biggest infringements of a person's civil liberties?

I am not a smoker, may I add?.

You're a braver man than I am, joeluke, to come out with such a statement on this site. Light blue touchpaper and retire.
Lol mike, it's called typing what you think
Each to his own. Years ago the Government gave cigarettes to the Forces. The only way to stop or discourage people from smoking will be to ban the sale of tobacco and the Government won't do that. Provision should be made for people who smoke, there used to be smoking rooms in public houses but now its they have to go outside, and still the whingers want them to go elsewhere. When I go into a pub I have to run the gauntlet of cigarette smokers, not nice, but if they were in a room of their own with ventilation and facilities what is wrong with that.
// To appease the whingeing smokers couldn't each town have a smokers pub? //

Er yes - that's the whole point. If they had a pub they could smoke in they'd stop whingeing - and why shouldn't they? I wouldn't object to it. As long as there was a sign outside identifying it as a smoker's pub so the rest of us could avoid going in there by accident what's the problem?
..I bet you it would be packed out every night as well. And as a bonus, it would be the only pub in town that you could walk past without treading on a carpet of fag ends and walking through a cloud of smoke as you negotiate the crowd of smokers huddled outside.
Maybe there could be a huge industrial sized chimney on the roof to expel the fumes?
i read a few months back that smoking brings 10 million a year into the country, of which only 5 million is spent on research of lung cancer and hospital treatment for smokers. if its bringing money in it'll never be fully banned !!
hmmmm i see both sides; however I am glad with the smoking ban. I can go to a pub or club without coming home smelling like an ashtray - or the worst - in a restaurant eating when people are smoking... there is no invisble wall to stop this coming into my area when im eating.... however, more than happy to let the smokers have a seperate room with ventilation (i do feel sorry for them having to stand outside!) all in all - it comes down to consideration for all.... no one should be forced to whole heartedly agree with opposite argument.. what ever happened to compromise??

PS - im sooo sick of smokers harking on about this tho, no-one thought twice when non-smokers were forced to inhale their smoke. what choice did we have? not go to the pub - which is their choice now.

anyways... i dont smoke --- hubby does, and he doesnt smoke in the house or when we eat etc, and in return i dont moan about the fact hes killing himself :) and even he has said he much prefers eating out etc now as even as a smoker he found it extremly rude when people sparked up when eating

anyways rant over

Yes - that or an extractor fan, whatever works.
The pubs will be packed out with non smokers when the ban comes in.
20 PD When? Three of our locals have closed completely.
its quite clear that the smoking ban is nt the only reason for pubs closing .... people are cutting back, theres a recession and going to the pub every night probably isnt as easy as it once was.. i know I havent been for ages, as simply I cant afford to spend £20 + tax for 1 night :( times are tough. business' are failing everywhere as the country is in a mess. think they are putting their heads in the sand if they think the only reason for empty pubs is because of a smoking ban !

It is ironic that the heyday of the British pub was when we were much less well off than we are today, what happened?
The Pubs were closing long before the Recession started so there is a link between the Smoking Ban and fewer punters going this has obviously been accelerated now with the current climate that we are in. I know that i would certainly be going to the Pub if i could have a fag and a beer inside. I dont mind being outside in the Summer but its getting a bit nipsy noo now for standing outside like a Lepper!
When im in charge i will bring it all back, the good ol days!
I used to go to the pub twice a week..............I haven't been in a pub since the smoking ban was introduced.
I agree Craft, i and many of my friends and colleagues would regulary go to the pub if we could smoke. I still have money to spend on beer and fags!
I do however, agree with the smoking ban in restaurants. Whenever I went for a meal I used to have my coffee/liquer served in the bar where I could enjoy a smoke.

It's no only the pubs that are closing, so are the Bingo Halls, these were once an haven for smokers.

'Eyes down look in for a Full House' puff, puff.

Apparently now not the same without a smoke.

Did you used to go to the pub simply to smoke?
I have never been in a pub since the ban came in.
