Labour have always loved low life criminal scum, terrorists and assorted baddies. So lets let 1000s of them out to continue their criminal careers. Wonderful.

gulliver, a sensible post every now and again might give you more credibility

But the Tories had already announced plans for something similar. What's the alternative in the short term as prisons are full? The problem has been known about for years. Even this measure will only help for a short period and will have to be extended (ie more released), and some court hearings postponed to help cope with known increases in numbers.

Are terrorists going to be released early?

The prisoners were due to be released early anyway but will now be released earlier than scheduled.

Build some temp camps, like they did for POWs. Ain't rocket is it.

Obviously jail is too cushy, crims are not deterred by it. Reform the whole system so it's not like Butlins.

"Ministry of Justice figures show that 10,083 prisoners were allowed to walk free under the end of custody supervised licence (ECSL) scheme between October 2023 and June 2024 in England and Wales.

Under the scheme, announced in October 2023, some prisoners could be freed 18 days before their conditional release date. That was increased to 35 days in March and then to 70 days in May."

Why were the Tories not building extra accommodation instead of releasing them early?

Why were you not having a go at them?

//Build some temp camps, like they did for POWs. Ain't rocket is it//

Were you asking The Tories to do the same last year when the issues were clear then?

Hopefully more building will happen but the spin has already started about prisons being too expensive- £600000 per  cell to build apparently! Sounds like creative accounting to me. Some prefab type things might help if they are secure enough...but do we have enough prison officers?  It may take years to sort this out

"Were you asking The Tories to do the same last year when the issues were clear then?" - yes I have always advocated creating more space if needed and also making them harsh so it deters most.

Amazing just how well the con party ignored the problem for so long. Nevertheless your above statement regarding labour loving such baddies is so silly i nearly didnt bother to reply, but i guess someone needs to.

Its no use using whataboutery with the Tories, Labour are in power now so they need to come up with the ideas.  Surely having been in opposition for so long they must have something better than 'let them all out'.  But of course thats how the left work and we can see how it has worked out in the USA.

"they must have something better than 'let them all out'. "

They have, which is why some are being released earlier than planned.

Build new prisons and have them staffed and operational within the first month of government.  Seems a bit of a stretch (no pun intended) there.

600K a cell in clearly nonsence, anyone got any reliable figures?

I think there are a couple fo things here.  Firstly with the population growing the infrastructure needs to have a plan and prisons along with hospitals, roads, schools, power etc need to be in that plan.

Immediately, yes release of some prisoners may be ok, start with those jailed for not paying the TV tax :-j and low level crimes, but tags must be used for the duration of the sentence, any violation go straight to Jail.

TTT is correct, Jails need to be humane but harsh.  Make it a place no one wants to go.

For lifers and long term prisons contract it out to somewhere like Thailand or Turkey where they know how to run a jail.  Make it worth their while and I am sure they would be up for it.

Indeed, whataboutery is the strict preserve of the fiscally prudent right and their acolytes.

Question Author

11:49 no but there are plenty of places that can be used as temporary nicks till they create more capicity.

//They have, which is why some are being released earlier than planned.//

So letting them out then.  Duh!

ymb: "For lifers and long term prisons contract it out to somewhere like Thailand or Turkey where they know how to run a jail.  Make it worth their while and I am sure they would be up for it." - it cost about £60k per prisoner in the UK, if we offered those places half that they'd snap our arm off. Great idea.

TTT, bit like Rwanda then?  You really want more money down the drain?

Letting some of them out early isn't letting them all out, is it?

Duh!

But, youngmafbog, you'd said letting them ALL out. They're just letting some out
