Ok, please sign up here, stating knitting experience and do you have any knitting on the go at the moment. if you can't knit at all then do the more experienced have ways of theaching them on here??

Mr Alba never had that problem and is watching me type this.

Anyhoo, when starting a new row of knitting, do you go from the back, as it were. I was told this kept a straight line down the way.

I usually slip one alba .So ..on a knit row ..slip one and the on the way back on a purl row slip one .This gives a neat edge for sewing up depending on your pattern .

After I'd posted about the 'back' thing, I then remembered the slip then carry on. Shame on me, have only done 15 rows but had to make dinner.

I love the idea of knitting for babies! I so miss having a sewing machine, used to do allsorts when I was younger and in 1st year textiles when everyone else was making beanbags and cushions I made a fully lined waistcoat haha :)

I have made myself get my knitting needles out again tonight. After a few abortive attempts at bigger stuff and ending up giving up as my arthritis/cat hanging on knitting needle was annoying me I've decided to scale back my ambition and do something simple and more arthritis friendly so started knitting some little squares I can then patch together to make a cot blanket or similar.

I went and spent ages in our local wool/fabric/craft shop the other day (so few left now!) and got some cheap toy wool balls in as I have another project in mind :)

Going to keep on with the squares for now and get back into it and, hands permitting, go onto different stitches and do some crochet along the way. Even the cat has been good this evening, just curled up in my knees and went to sleep while I was knitting away!

i can knit, embroider and sew but would love to be able to do cross stitch. is it difficult? how do i start? friend gave me a printed picture on canvas and promised to show me but very unfortunately she became ill and then died. would like to do this in memory of her but don't know how to start.

lady-j - I can knit, crochet, sew, embroider, make all sorts of things, but there is no way I can do cross-stitch. My one effort was such a complete mess I gave up without even trying again. Best of luck if you can manage it.

Cross stitch is very easy, ladyj - you just have to remember that all your crosses are crossed in the same direction :-)

I felt like that about cross stitch I just couldn't get it, then leafing through a stitching magazine one day it all sort of fell into place and I was away! I'm now regarded by my family as an addict.
So ladies, what seems to be the problem with x-stitch?

thanks boxy wil have another go. i really would like to do this in her memory. i don't particularly like the picture but that is not the point. it is just the effort and the memory that is important.

I used to do some cross stitch, I used to use an embroidery hoop to keep it nice and taught and easier to work.

Lady-j I taught myself cross stitch by buying those tiny mini kits, and practised with those. Something like this

I gradually moved on to bigger kits and was really enjoying it (and knitting) until the local craft shop closed :o(. I haven't done much since then but I'm gaining interest again.
